Huawei, the Chinese smartphone maker is all set to Make in India. The 3rd largest smartphone company in the world has announced that it will make Honor smartphones in India. The Make In India initiative was started by the Government of India to encourage multinational as well as national companies to manufacture in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the campaign on 25th September 2014 and the initiative resulted in 63$ Billion FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) in 2015.
Huawei gained fame for working with Google on the Nexus 6P smartphone. Their Honor series of smartphones are also highly popular in India. The Huawei P9, their current flagship was highly praised by the media as one of the best camera phones of this year.
Huawei already has a Research & Development Center set up in Bengaluru for which it had invested $170 Million in February last year. And now with the Make in India initiative Huawei is set to manufacture their Honor smartphones in India. Huawei has partnered with Flex for manufacturing smartphones in India. The manufacturing will start in the first week of October with one Honor smartphone. The company then plans to scale to 3 million smartphones by the end on 2017.
Like Huawei, there are a lot of other smartphone makers that have already started making smartphones in India. Spice Mobiles has set up a mobile manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh with an investment of Rs. 5 Billion ($74 Million). Samsung, India’s leading smartphone brand is also a part of the Make in India campaign and has already started making phones in the country. Another Chinese player, Xiaomi is also manufacturing in India at the Foxconn plant in Hyderabad.
