Google has been proactive when it comes to adding features to Nexus phones that it sees other OEMs are doing well. We saw fingerprint scanners added to this year’s Nexus phones when devices like the Galaxy S6 or the iPhone 6 got it and became successful. They also answered the request of a premium looking Nexus phone, in the form of the Nexus 6P, the most premium device built till date. The trend looks to be continuing as Google is set to include a new use of the fingerprint scanner on the upcoming Nexus devices.
We have seen independent OEMs, including the likes of Xiaomi building in a capability where you can use the fingerprint scanner to click a selfie or the recent Lenovo K5 Note, where you can use the scanner to even launch apps. If this report by Android Police is to be believed then Google will bring the ability to see your notifications on the Android phone by simply swiping down on the fingerprint scanner. You simply have to place your finger on the scanner and the pull downwards for the notification tray to appear. Fairly simple.
It is not clear whether the same feature will come on the existing Nexus devices with a fingerprint scanner, like the Nexus 5X or the Nexus 6P, but this is a positive news for those who wanted fingerprint scanners to do a little bit more than just unlock their smartphones. It is worth waiting for, whether brands like Samsung and HTC would follow the trick too and add an extra functionality on their fingerprint scanners in the upcoming flagships.
