Talk about Fingerprint Scanner Mobile Phones, ask your questions!

Fingerprint scanners in smartphones can be traced all the way back to 2011, when it was by Motorola in their Atrix handset. But because of its difficult usability, it never really caught on. That is, until Apple put it in iPhone 5s by making it extremely easy to use and accurate in function. Authentec, a company specialising in fingerprint technology, was bought by Apple for $356 million so that it could take a leap in fingerprint scanning with Touch ID.

An average smartphone user unlocks his device almost 110 times a day. This fact itself highlights the importance of a fingerprint scanner. Apart from this there are many other utilities of having a fingerprint scanner like it can be used for making payments via mobile. In some cases, the developers are allowed to make use of the fingerprint scanner if supported by the device. For example, Apple provides an API which gives the app makers an access to the scanner. Thus one will can use fingerprint authentication in their apps. The security level is also enhanced and one can protect content or data from unauthorised access.

No doubt there are other options available like PIN, pattern, smart unlock, face unlock etc, they too have some limitations of their own. PIN and Pattern are easy to copy, someone can just overlook the PIN or pattern you're entering on your device and break in. Smart unlock, where a device is unlocked when it's paired with another Bluetooth device or WiFi network or in a predetermined location It isn't foolproof either. Face unlock cannot be used under all conditions like low-light.

Fingerprint scanning is proving to be one of the easiest, safest ways to authenticate yourself on your phone to do everything from unlocking the phone to making digital payments to locking down sensitive data in apps. Presently, other than an iPhone, there are other companies that are providing similar scanners with the same ease of use & accuracy as Apple's Touch ID. They include flagships from companies like Samsung, HTC and even brands like Gionee and Meizu. Even OnePlus has claimed to put a fingerprint scanner that's "faster than Touch ID" in their second generation device.

Moving forward, one can expect a fingerprint scanner to be supported in almost all upcoming high end phones. We are hopeful such a useful feature becomes de facto for phones in all price ranges in the near future.
