Gionee created waves in India by being one of the first China-based phone makers that try to compete with the high-end phone makers. While Gionee may not be the most familiar name when it comes to smartphones, at least globally, you would be surprised to know that it is one of the largest OEMs out in the market today. At its headquarters in Shenzhen, China, Gionee HQ is a house of 1500 full time employees with R&D centers set up in several other places including Shanghai and Hangzhou.
By 2006, the Gionee Industrial Park which is the production unit of Gionee stood in a land space of 500 acres of ground with an investment of more than 1 billion RMB. The current production capacity of the plant stands at about 40 million devices a year, but once the entire park is set up and ready, the same will double, giving the plant a production capacity of 80 million units. Without a doubt, this would make Gionee Industrial Park the largest site for mobile production.
The real strength of Gionee lies in its R&D and the ability to come up with devices that are not only innovative and unique but also fit the pocket of its consumers without burning an absolute hole. It has been since 2011, that Gionee has been expanding outside China, making its presence felt in countries most notably including: India, Nigeria, Vietnam, Taiwan, Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines and Bangladesh very recently. As of 2015, Gionee exports more than 1 million devices to the above mentioned and more countries.
We have seen several high end lifestyle products from Gionee in the form of the S5.5, S5.1 and most recently the S7. All the three phones were immaculately thin and an inspiration when it comes to design language. Not just this, the likes of E7 and E8 showcase that Gionee has the ability to mix with the big boys and chunk out really powerful and big devices with plenty of fire in the belly. The Marathon series with its M2, M3 and M5 have been giant houses of power with their big battery life even bringing the ability to charge other phones using it. While Gionee has been criticized in the past for its less than perfect software optimisation, the Chinese brand has definitely improved on that front too, though some more work still needs to go there. Giving the likes of Samsung mobile and Apple a run for their money in several states of India, Gionee is gradually climbing the charts of acceptability and becoming a brand that people are beginning to talk about and take notice. They're also positioning themselves a step above new entrants like Xiaomi, Huawei Honor or YU, that sell their products at razor-thin margins.
