The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India or TRAI has released its Telecom Subscription Data for the month of September 2020. The August data revealed that Airtel added more new subscribers than Jio for the first time in over four years. However, just like the previous month, while Airtel continues to add more member, Jio still remains the biggest telco in the country with more market share. Airtel adds more subscribers than Jio in September 2020
As per TRAI Telecom Subscription Data September 2020 report, Airtel’s subscribers grew from 322.8 million in August to 326.6 million in September. This is an increment of 3.77 million subscribers in one month. Notably, this is the highest-ever subscribers gain by any telco during a period of a month. Airtel has a market share of 28.44 percent and is the second-largest telco.
Jio continues to be the largest telco with 53.19 percent market share. However, Mukesh Ambani-led telco only gained 1.46 million subscribers to grow from 402.6 million wireless subscribers in August to 404.1 million subscribers in September. Notably, this is the second time that Airtel added over a million more subscribers than Jio.
The third-largest telecom operator continues to be Vi with a market share of 25.73 percent. However, the loss-making telco continued to lose active subscribers even in the month of September. The telecom operator lost over 4.65 million subscribers according to the TRAI Telecom Subscription Data September 2020 report.
The state-run telecom operator, BSNL also registered a growth in the month of September. However, the numbers of new subscribers went down in the month of September. The telco added 78,454 new subscribers in September as compared to 0.21 million in August. BSNL had a market share of 10.36 percent by the end of September.
