Alternatives to the Explosive Galaxy Note 7

On: October 10, 2016

Korean smartphone maker Samsung is having a hard time dealing with its latest smartphone the Galaxy Note 7. The smartphone launched a month back has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. There were 35 cases of the Galaxy Note 7 exploding before Samsung officially issued a global recall. Samsung claimed to have found the source of the exploding phones pinning it down to faulty batteries. The company claimed to have fixed the issues and had started replacements for the said smartphone.

The replacement devices, seem to have the same issue. There have been a few cases reported recently where a safe replacement has exploded causing harm to the user. While there has been no communication from Samsung over the issue. US Carriers like AT&T and Verizon have halted sales of the smartphone altogether. Verizon has also stopped issuing replacement Note 7 units giving users the choice of a complete refund or another smartphone.

In India, the Note 7 launch was delayed to October 7 but the device still isn’t officially launched. While the people who have pre-booked the Note 7 were offered a few freebies, it looks unlikely that the smartphone will find many takers at the moment. The Note is a hazard and may cause injury to you or others around you. In case you were planning to pick this phone up, here are alternative that will be a much safer bet.

Google Pixel XL

The Google Pixel XL is the first smartphone that is made by Google. The phone is manufactured by HTC for Google and sports some of the best hardware available on Android. One of the interesting features of the Pixel XL is the Google Assistant which will work like your personal assistant. The camera on the Pixel is also one of the best and scores the most points on DXO Mark. Google has promised 2 years of software and 3 years of security updates for the Pixel XL. The Pixel XL is priced at Rs 67,000 with pre-booking starting on 13th Oct.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

The Samsung S7 Edge was launched earlier this year and is a good all-rounder. The Galaxy S7 Edge is safe to use and has pretty much the same hardware as Note 7 sans the stylus. The Edge display also makes the phone stand out among the sea of smartphones. This smartphone is also IP68 water resistant and can take a dunk in the pool and come out unscathed. The S7 Edge is readily available is priced at Rs 50,900 in the market.

Apple iPhone 7 Plus

The latest smartphone from Apple is also the first iPhone to sport a dual camera setup on the back. The iPhone 7 Plus is currently available in India and has some exciting offers from banks and from network providers like Airtel and Reliance Jio. This iPhone is dust and water resistant sporting a IP67 rating. The iPhone 7 Plus sadly misses out on the 3.5mm headphone jack in order to waterproof the phones better. The Apple earphones in the box have a lightning pin connector and Apple has also bundled in a lightning to 3.5mm connector.

Apple iPhone 6s Plus

The iPhone 6s Plus launched last year is still a good alternative to the Galaxy Note 7. And now, with the launch of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus the prices have only gotten better. Apple also upgraded the storage options by offering double the existing storage capacity on the smartphone. The 6s Plus sport a 3D Touch display that helps users interact better. If you want an Apple replacement for the Note 7 and save some money on the side, the iPhone 6s Plus would be the one to pick.
