E-commerce giant Amazon has entered the fitness wearable market with the launch of a fitness tracker. It is dubbed as the Amazon Halo Band and is offered with a separate subscription service for more advanced features. The fitness band is s a health and wellness device.
Apart from physical health, the Halo Band focuses of psychological health metrics as well. The device doesn’t feature a display and users will have to rely on the Halo app for checking their health-related stats and information. ‘The Halo Band combines a suite of AI-powered health tools with innovative and stylish wrist band’ Amazon said in a statement.
Amazon Halo Band specifications and features
While the Amazon Halo band lacks a display, it is equipped with various sensors including heart rate monitor, LED indicator, accelerometer, temperature sensor and two microphones. There is a pill-shaped button on the side and the fitness band can be availed in three colours – Black+Onyx, Blush+Rose Gold, and Winter+Silver. Users also get the option to choose between fabric and silicone bands. The Amazon Halo is waterproof up to 50 ATM.
The Amazon Halo Band features 3D body scanning with the help of the user’s smartphone camera. The scans are then used to calculate health parameters like body fat percentage using machine learning. There is a slider option that lets users check what their body would look like with less or more fat. Amazon says that the body scan photos are automatically deleted from their servers after processing. Amazon recommends users to scan themselves only once in two weeks.
Another notable feature on the Halo Band is tracking the tone of the user’s voice through the equipped microphones. It’s worth noting that there’s no Alexa integration and the device isn’t meant for voice commands. The Tone feature listens to the user’s voice and determines their emotional state throughout the day. It has to be set up initially to recognize the voice of the user and ignore those of others.
The feature can also be muted by pressing the hardware button until the LED light turns Red. The Tone feature uses machine learning to analyze the speech. The voice samples are sent to the user’s phone via Bluetooth and deleted once they are processed. The results are presented in various categories like hopeful, elated, hesitant, bored, apologetic, happy, worried, confused, and affectionate.
Apart from body scan and tone feature, the Amazon Halo Band also comes with basic tracking features. These include activity tracker, step counter, sleep score and a heart rate monitor.
