Viewership of Indian regional content, be it films or web series, has significantly increased over the last few years. OTT giant, Amazon Prime Video, in a recent announcement informed that the platform would release a total of 40 original films and shows in a mix of Hindi and other Indian languages.
One such show, Ammu is slated for release on Amazon Prime Video, on October 19, 2022. It is Charukesh Sekar’s directorial, Ammu. Written by the director himself and produced by Kalyan Subramaniam, Kaarthekeyen Santhanam under the Stone Bench banner, the film stars Naveen Chandra, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Bobby Simha in pivotal roles.
Besides this, Amazon Prime Video also announced two other formats in Telugu. One being Naga Chaitanya’s supernatural thriller series Dhootha and the next, is an anthology, Modern Love Hyderabad – a regional version of the popular show Modern Love. This is also being produced in Hindi titled Modern Love Mumbai.
The announcement of Ammu’s release was done by three renowned actresses from the south – Sai Pallavi, Manju Warrier, and Samyuktha Hegde – who also shared that the film focuses on highlighting the empowering story of a woman rising in the face of adversity.
Presented as a drama thriller, Ammu will follow the story of a woman who faces domestic violence in her daily life. However, she decides to raise her voice and overcome internal conflicts by discovering her inner strength. The journey of this transformation from being a victim to fighting against her abusive husband is the crux of the film.
The team from Amazon Prime Video took to YouTube to share the trailer with a message that read, “Ammu thought marriage was a fairy tale – full of love and magic. It all changed when her cop-husband Ravi hit her for the very first time. What Ammu thought was a one-off incident turned into a never-ending cycle of abuse, trapping her and breaking her soul and spirit. Pushed to her limits, Ammu teams up with an unlikely ally to break free.”
Aishwarya Lekshmi plays the titular role alongside Naveen Chandra and Simha.
The first look of Ammu was revealed recently by ace directors Vineeth Sreenivasan, Kiranraj, Tharun Bhascker and Karthik Subbaraj. The latter, who is also the creative producer of the film, in a recent interview said, “Ammu, as a film, is more than just a revenge thriller. The movie is rooted in drama, laced with the unpredictability of life that will keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. It is fantastically performed by some of the industry’s finest with Aishwarya, Naveen and Simha giving it their all. I applaud Charukesh Sekar for bringing this gripping and important narrative while keeping intact its emotional core.”
Actor Naveen Chandra has been seen in several direct-to-OTT releases in the past and has experienced the taste of digital formats. For the actress, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ammu will be the second OTT release post-Satyadev’s Godse.
Ammu is available on Amazon Prime Video in multiple languages. One can watch the film in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.
