Unlike iPhones which get refreshed every year, the iPhone maker took nearly three years to introduce the second generation AirPods, which debuted in March 2019 and it was followed by AirPods Pro in October 2019. Last year, Apple expanded the AirPods lineup further with the launch of AirPods Max. Now, we have the AirPods 3, which can be dubbed as arguably the biggest change to AirPods since its launch in 2016.

Apple AirPods 3 price in India and other markets

In India, the AirPods 3rd generation will be available for Rs 18,500. Apple has confirmed that AirPods 2nd generation will retail for Rs 12,900 while AirPods Pro will be available for same price of Rs 24,900 but includes MagSafe charging case. Apple AirPods 3 essentially sits between the second-generation AirPods and the AirPods Pro. It is also priced accordingly with a retail price of $179 which now includes the wireless charging case as standard and support for MagSafe. The second-generation AirPods will continue to be available at $129 while AirPods Pro will be available for $249.

Apple AirPods 3 specifications and features

Apple AirPods 3rd generation comes with IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance

With the launch of AirPods Pro in late 2019, Apple found a sweet spot in terms of design for its true wireless earbuds. The AirPods Pro brought a design that did not look like EarPods with the wires cut off. With the AirPods 3, Apple is taking those learnings to the more affordable price segment.

This is the first major design for the AirPods since its launch in 2016. We are getting a hybrid between the original AirPods and the AirPods Pro. It retains the earbuds design of the original AirPods and pairs it with the shorter stem design first seen on the AirPods Pro. As a result, we have a product that retains the Earpods DNA but is equipped with a shorter stem.

In contrast to many rumours, Apple is not offering a silicone tip option with the AirPods 3. This could be because of how comfortable AirPods are even without those eartips. Apart from the design, Apple AirPods 3 relies on the H1 chip that uses computational audio to deliver improved sound including support for spatial audio with dynamic head tracking.

With artists introducing new tracks with Spatial Audio support, the new AirPods will certainly take the experience to more consumers. Apple is also highlighting the microphone covered by an acoustic mesh to eliminate wind noise and support for AAC-ELD code. The AirPods 3 is still an entry-level device and it thus lacks active noise cancellation seen on the AirPods Pro.

While it missed out on ANC, Apple has managed to increase the battery life over the previous generation. Apple claims that new AirPods offer up to six hours of listening time and up to four hours of talk time. The charging case, which supports MagSafe, can add four additional charges taking the total listening time to 30 hours. This year, the AirPods 3 also comes standard with wireless charging.

The 3rd generation AirPods is clearly designed to bring features seen on the AirPods Pro to more consumers. It retains features such as one-touch setup and offers IPX4 rating. With the AirPods 3, Apple is challenging the likes of Jabra Elite 7 Pro but might appeal the most to only those living on Apple ecosystem.
