- Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple has informed suppliers that a 2024 iPhone SE will not be released
- To ensure real-world performance, the iPhone maker plans to test the 5G chip in the iPhone SE model before rolling it out to iPhone 16 series
There has been no announcement about Apple’s plans to launch the next iPhone SE, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. As per reports, the smartphone will debut in 2024 as the iPhone SE 4. According to Kuo, Apple will also rely on Qualcomm for 5G chips in 2024.
“The supply chain has received instructions from Apple indicating that the production and shipment plans for the 2024 iPhone SE 4 have been cancelled rather than delayed,” as per a blog post by Ming Chi-Kuo. According to him, Qualcomm will benefit the most from Apple’s decision to cancel the iPhone SE 4 in 2024.
Apple continues to use Qualcomm’s 5G chips
Apple wanted to test its own baseband chip before incorporating it into the iPhone 16 series with iPhone SE 4. Qualcomm will remain Apple’s 5G chip supplier until at least 2024 despite the cancellation of the phone.
“Due to concerns that the performance of the in-house baseband chip may not be up to par with Qualcomm’s, Apple initially planned to launch its baseband chip in 2024 and let the low-end iPhone SE 4 adopt it first, and decide whether to let the iPhone 16 use its baseband chip depending on the development status of iPhone SE 4. However, the cancellation of the iPhone SE 4 has significantly increased the chances of Qualcomm remaining the exclusive supplier of baseband chips for the 2H24 new iPhone 16 series, which is better than the market consensus that Qualcomm will start losing iPhone orders in 2024,” Kuo said.
The cancellation of the iPhone SE4 will also help Qualcomm maintain its lead in the global high-end mobile phone RF market until 2024.
According to reports, Kuo further stated, “The company’s strong product mix, which confers competitive advantages, is expected to mitigate the negative impacts of the economic recession and allow Qualcomm to return to solid growth ahead of its competitors once the economy recovers,”
There was speculation that the iPhone SE 4 would have a notched design, similar to the iPhone XR. After releasing the second-generation iPhone SE two years earlier, Apple released the third-generation iPhone SE two years later.
