Apple Launches New iPad Pro With Face ID, A12X Bionic chipset and USB Type-C

On: October 30, 2018

Apple took to the stage in Brooklyn today to unveil the all new iPad Pro, alongside an updated MacBook Air and Mac Mini. Let’s delve into the technical specifications and features of the tablet.

iPad Pro Specifications & Features:

The new iPad Pro has been overhauled with design changes and has been unveiled in a new 11-inch size, alongside the existing 12.9-inch variant. The tablet sports an edge-to-edge Liquid Retina LCD display with slimmer bezels, which Apple says enables the 11-inch model fit into the same frame as the previous 10.5-inch variant.  The new iPads are also slim, at just 5.9mm in thickness.

Apple has axed the Home button which integrated the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. The new iPad Pro instead relies on Face ID by using the TrueDepth camera system. Apple says Face ID will work in both portrait and landscape orientation. Speaking of the cameras, the new iPad Pro features a 7MP front camera with support for Group FaceTime, Smart HDR, Animoji and Memoji. The rear 12MP camera features an improved True Tone flash and can record 4K video at 60 fps. The new iPad Pros also feature four speaker audio with wider stereo sound.

Apple has swapped the Lightning connector with a USB Type-C port for charging and transferring data. The new iPad Pro also supports reverse charging, so you can charge other devices using it like a powerbank. Other connectivity options include Gigabit-class LTE, eSIM technology and Bluetooth 5.0.

The iPad Pro is powered by the A12X Bionic chipset, built on 7nm technology. The A12X Bionic has over 10 billion transistors, an 8-core CPU, 7-core GPU and a Neural Engine. In terms of battery life, Apple promises 10-hour of usage and bundles an 18-watt power adapter.

The iPad Pro also comes with a second-generation Apple Pencil. The updated Pencil attaches magnetically to the tablets, pairs automatically and charges wirelessly. Apple has also updated the iPad Pro keyboard, the Smart Keyboard Folio. It now attaches magnetically, and can be adjusted in two angles. Since it’s a folio case, it protects both the back and the display of the iPad Pro.

Pricing & Availability:

The new iPad Pros are available in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 1TB variants. While the 11-inch model starts at Rs 71,900 for the Wi-Fi model and Rs 85,900 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular variant, the 12.9-inch variant starts at Rs 89,900 for the Wi-Fi model and Rs 1,03,900 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular version. The second-generation Apple Pencil is priced at Rs 10,900, while the Smart Keyboard Folio costs Rs 15,900 for the 11-inch and Rs 17,900 for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro respectively. The new iPad Pro will be launched in India later this year.
