Apple iPad with foldable display could be in works, here’s when its expected to release

  • Apple is working on its first foldable display device
  • It is likely to be based on the iPad instead of an iPhone
  • It is expected to debut in 2024

Apple’s first foldable device will not be based on an iPhone, reveals a new report by analyst firm CCS Insight. Several Android smartphone OEMs like Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo have already launched several foldable phones. Most reports have claimed that Apple is also working on a foldable iPhone. However, a new report reveals that the company is working on a foldable iPad.

Brands like Google, OnePlus, and Realme that have yet to enter the foldable market are expected to launch their foldable phones soon. However, it appears that Apple may not follow this trend.

Apple iPad with the foldable display may launch in 2024

According to Ben Wood, CCS Insight Chief of Research, Apple is likely to shun the trend of launching a foldable iPhone. He also stated that such a device would cost approximately $2,500 (Rs 2,05,900). At present, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the costliest iPhone available on the market with a starting price of $1,599 (Rs 1,39,900 in India). He claimed that the arrival of a foldable iPhone might result in the cannibalisation of the existing iPhones.

Wood said that the company is likely to launch a foldable iPad instead of a foldable iPhone. Several reports, including reliable sources like Apple Insider and popular Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, have claimed that a foldable iPhone will debut in 2024. Apple is yet to confirm whether it will be launching a foldable iPad or iPhone. Still, it’s likely that Apple will announce the first foldable device in 2024.

Many Android brands have re-entered the tablet market post-COVID-19. Rival brands may launch Android-based tablets to compete with Apple’s foldable iPad.

Coming back to the CCS Insight report, Apple will launch its in-house 5G modem in 2025. At present, Apple devices that support cellular connectivity rely on Qualcomm’s 5G modems. It looks like the company’s next A-series chipset will likely have a modem built-in, making it a “single-chip” solution for iPhones in 2025.
