Apple iPhone 13 production in India likely to begin in April: Report

  • Apple iPhone 13 has production has started again in India
  • Its production was halted in December 2021 due to poor standards at Chennai-based Foxconn plant
  • Foxconn’s plant in Chennai has about 17,000 employees

Apple iPhone 13 production is expected to begin once again in April. The iPhone maker had begun trial production of iPhone 13 in Chennai in December 2021. The company was expected to begin the commercial production of its flagship phone in India for both the domestic and export market by February. However, production was halted when employees at the Foxconn facility in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, complained about poor standards.

To recall, Apple unveiled the iPhone 13 lineup back in September 2021. Now, the production of the iPhone 13 is reportedly set to restart in India in April as Foxconn has resolved the issues at its Chennai plant.

The Sriperumbudur plant has around 17,000 employees operating in three shifts. The Cupertino-based firm was supposed to start iPhone 13 production at the said plant earlier this year in India. However, the company had to postpone it because of the protests in December 2021 over issues like mass food poisoning incidents and unhygienic conditions at the accommodation facilities.

After the protests, the Sriperumbudur plant was kept on probation. Apple had separately conducted an investigation and audit of standards at the Foxconn facility. An Apple spokesperson said in January that some of the remote dormitory accommodations and dining rooms meant for the employees did not meet Apple’s requirements.

It asked Foxconn to improve the working and living conditions of its employees at the plant. In the same month, Foxconn released a statement in which it said that it had started implementing a range of corrective actions. Now that the production is finally set to begin again at the Sriperumbudur facility, it appears that Foxconn is complying with Apple’s strict standards.

The news comes on the heels of Apple launching the iPhone SE (2022) last week, which should be made in India soon. The compact-sized iPhone offers specs like a 4.7-inch Retina IPS LCD display, Apple A15 Bionic chip, 4GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, a 7-megapixel FaceTime camera, a 12-megapixel rear camera with OIS support, 18W fast charging, and wireless charging support.
