Apple discontinues the iPod Touch
The first generation iPod Touch was launched way back in 2007, the same year as the first iPhone. Over the next few years, it got various iterations and the device was last updated in mid-2019. The iPod Touch being a music player had pretty much the same design, hardware, and software as the iPhones but lacked support for phone calls.
The seventh-generation iPod Touch had a 4-inch screen and a physical home button. It was equipped with an A10 Fusion chipset that also powered the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The device was available in 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB variants with access to Apple Music, iTunes Store, and also Apple Arcade.
“Today, the spirit of iPod lives on. We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all our products from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to Homepod Mini and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV,” says Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing.
Over the years, Apple’s iPod lineup including the iPod Touch received stiff competition from smartphones that offered various media and entertainment features along with storage space. Additionally, the rise of online music streaming services deemed the iPod Touch an unnecessary device for Apple.
Apple said that the iPod Touch will remain available for purchase while stocks last from the brand’s online stores and authorised resellers.
