Apple has launched the Watch Series 6 at its ‘Time Flies’ event tonight. The event was hosted as part of its annual September launch cycle, however, the iPhone 12 series was not the part of the line-up this time. Instead, the event is dedicated to iPads and Apple Watch. The event also witnessed the launch of the first-of-its-kind Apple Watch SE as well.
The Apple Watch Series 6 comes in as the successor to last year’s Watch Series 5 and brings several upgrades across the board. The new-generation Apple Watch comes with an all-new blood oxygen monitor SPo2 sensor, enhanced sleep tracking and ECG. The Apple Watch SE is the toned-down model for those looking for an affordable option.
Apple Watch Series 6 specifications and features
Apple is offering the Watch Series 6 with a similar design as the previous-generation Apple Watches. There’s an Always-on Retina display, which is up to 2.5 times brighter than the Apple Watch Series. Powering the Apple Watch Series 6 is an S6 dual-core SoC and the wearable boots the latest watchOS 7. The Apple Watch Series 6 also offers the same all-day 18-hour battery life, while offering 20 percent faster performance.
The new software comes with numerous health and fitness features. Apart from the usual features like fall detection, ECG and cycle tracking, there are few additional features this time around. The headlining features include a new Sleep App for sleep tracking, VO2 Max (a fancy term for cardiac health) and handwashing detection. There’s also Blood Oxygen saturation monitoring through SpO2 sensor.
The Apple Watch Series 6 supports the new Family Setup feature in watchOS7, which allows kids and older family members who don’t have iPhones to use the Apple Watch. Apple has equipped the latest watch with an always-on altimeter, improved watch faces, and fast charging.
This year Apple has introduced a new band called Solo Loop, which is a stretchable band being offered in two finishes – silicone and braided. Another new addition is the first-of-its-kind Leather Link bands, which use flexible moulded magnets to lock in place.
