Apple Watch Series 8 and Watch SE 2 officially launched: features, India price and availability

  • The Apple Watch Series 8 gets a couple of new features
  • Apple also unveiled the Watch SE 2 and the Watch Ultra during the Far Out event
  • The newly announced low-power mode feature will also make its way to older Apple Watch variants

After weeks of speculation, Apple has finally unveiled the successor to Watch Series 7, aptly named the Apple Watch Series 8. The Apple Watch Ultra is likely to garner most of the attention over the coming days, while the Series 8 now serves as a mid-tier offering in the Apple Watch lineup, which has also seen the introduction of the Watch SE 2.

Among the notable new additions to the Apple Watch Series 8 is crash detection, which complements the existing fall detection feature. The company says crash detection can automatically alert the driver’s contacts whenever they’re in a serious crash. However, this only works when the driver is wearing the watch. Apple has included a high G-force accelerometer in addition to the three-axis gyroscope to enable car crash detection.

The Series 8 is also getting additional cycle tracking features including the ability to provide detailed ovulation info. Apple is leveraging a new temperature sensor on the smartwatch to give women a “retrospective estimate” of their next ovulation date. The company specifies that all health-related data is encrypted within the device, quelling any privacy fears.

Also coming to the Apple Watch is a low-power mode, similar to iPhones, which allows users to boost the battery life from 18 hours to 36 hours. This feature will also make its way to older Apple Watch models (Series 4 and up) provided they’re running watchOS 9. International cellular roaming is also making its way to the Apple Watch Series 8 and older models.
