ASUS ROG Phone 2 with Snapdragon 855+ launched in India, prices start at Rs 37,999

Taiwanese smartphone maker ASUS launched the second-generation ROG Phone in China in July this year. The company has now unveiled the ROG Phone 2 (first impressions) in India. It comes with significant upgrades over the first generation ROG Phone that debuted last year. Let’s delve into the technical specifications below:

Display & Design:

On the display front, the ASUS ROG Phone 2 features a 6.59-inch AMOLED screen bearing a full HD+ resolution with HDR 10 support. The device offers a 120Hz refresh rate panel, which is a step up from 90Hz found on its predecessor. The ROG Phone 2 is the first smartphone to come with a 120Hz display and a dual vibrating motor for better haptic feedback. The smartphone comes with minimal bezels at the top and bottom in a 19.5:9 aspect ratio screen.

Design-wise, the ROG Phone 2 comes with a glossy back panel. There is a customisable RGB ROG logo located in the center while the dual-camera setup is placed in the same place as found on the first generation. The sides of the phone have touch-sensitive ‘AirTriggers’ feature. The ROG Phone 2 is also equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Hardware, Battery, and OS:

In terms of performance, the ASUS ROG Phone 2 houses top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset. It is paired with an Adreno 640 GPU onboard. The device is offered in two configurations w.r.t RAM and storage i.e 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 512GB. Inside, the gaming smartphone is equipped with a GameCool II liquid cooling system that includes vents, copper heat sink, and a 3D vapor chamber. The ROG Phone 2 draws its power from a massive 6,000mAh battery unit with support for 30W Quick Charge 4.0. Out of the box, the device runs on Android 9 Pie OS with ROG UI skinned on the top. 

Camera, Connectivity, and Accessories:

On the optics front, the ROG Phone 2 sports a dual-camera setup comprising of a 48MP IMX586 primary sensor and a 13MP super wide-angle lens. It is accompanied by dual-LED flash. On the front, the device is fitted with a 24MP snapper for selfies and other purposes. Connectivity-wise, the ROG Phone 2 comes with a USB-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 4G VoLTE.

Like the first generation ROG Phone, the latest one too comes with accessories like Aero Case, Aero Cooler II, Nintendo Switch Joy-Con like controllers called ROG Kunai Gamepad, ROG TwinView Dock II dual-screen accessory, and ROG Moble Desktop Dock. 

Pricing and Availability:

ASUS has priced the base model of ROG Phone 2 for Rs 37,999. The top-end variant carries a price tag of Rs 59,999 and will come later. The gaming smartphone will be available for purchase on Flipkart starting September 30th. Flipkart will offer 10 percent instant discount to orders placed using Axis Bank credit and debit card and ICICI Bank credit cards.

At this price tag, the ROG Phone 2 will compete against the likes of Black Shark 2 and nubia Red Magic 3.
