Gaming phones are gaining a huge traction today with the rise in number of mobile gamers. This was further evident with the recent launch of phones like the Razer phone and Xiaomi’s Black Shark. The Asus ROG is the latest gaming phone on the block. The Taiwanese company recently unveiled the ROG phone held at Computex 2018 earlier in June.
Bearing the Republic of Gamers tag, Asus is popularly known for its ROG lineup of laptops among the gaming community. It makes sense for the brand to extend this sub-brand for mobile gamers as Asus already fosters a good gaming community.
Display & Audio:
The ROG phone rocks a large 6.0-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 90Hz screen refresh rate and a response time of 1ms. This means that the screen refreshes 90 times per second providing smoother animations and transitions. The ROG phone is second to Razer in this aspect as it offers a 120Hz display. On the audio front, there is a headphone jack for plugging in any audio accessories. There is a dual front facing stereo speakers with smart amplifier for an immersive sound experience.
Performance & Storage:
Under the hood, the ROG phone packs impressive hardware firepower. It houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset overclocking a speed of 2.9GHz. The processor is paired with 8GB RAM and an integrated Adreno 630 graphics processor for multi-tasking and heavy gaming. There are two variants w.r.t storage, one with 128GB and the other one with a whopping 512GB depending on the configuration.
Asus has added GameCool 3D vapor chamber system that helps in dissipating heat better. Thus users can enjoy an uninterrupted gaming performance over a longer period of time without the device getting heated.
Camera & OS:
This gaming phone sports a dual rear camera setup comprising of 12MP + 8MP sensors. On the front, there is a 8MP snapper for clicking selfies and video calling. The ROG phone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box along with ROG gaming UI layered on the top. There is an X-Mode that helps in optimizing the gaming performance by disabling all the background processes.
Battery & Connectivity:
The ROG phone is powered by a massive 4,000 mAh battery unit which will aid long hours of gaming. It supports HyperCharge technology for faster charging in case you run out of battery. However the phone does not support wireless charging. Coming to the connectivity, the device comes with 802.11ad WiFi, Bluetooth 5, NFC, and GPS. The ROG phone has three USB Type-C ports for connecting various accessories.
Apart from the specifications, Asus has bundled various accessories with its ROG phone. The device comes with an AeroActive cooler which acts as a cooling fan when the device gets heated up during intense gaming sessions. There’s a Gamevice controller that works with WiGig dock to wirelessly stream to TV via 802.11ad WiFi connectivity. Asus has also added a Mobile Desktop Dock that lets you connect to a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The TwinView Dock turns the ROG phone into a dual screen device with an additional 6,000 mAh battery. It has the same specifications as the ROG phone.
Going by the specifications and the accessories Asus has offered, the ROG phone does look impressive on the sheet. It’s a real rival to the Razer phone & Xiaomi’s Black Shark. As of now, there is no information regarding its global availability or pricing. But fresh reports suggest that the phone might hit Indian shores making it the first gaming phone in the country.
