Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1: First Impressions

On: April 23, 2018

Asus, the Taiwanese company for the first time has globally launched a smartphone in India. This smartphone has been dubbed as the Zenfone Max Pro M1 and totally lives up to its name. With this phone, the company has finally listened to its users and geared up to face the tough competition existing in the mid-range smartphone market in India. Let’s have a look at what makes this phone special.

Display and Design

The notch trend initiated by the iPhone X which was blatantly copied by most Android OEMs (Asus included) is thankfully missing from the Zenfone Max Pro M1. The phone, however, does have a 5.99-inch bezel-less display that feels fairly large and ideal for video content consumption. On the design front, the phone feels very sturdy and aesthetic, considering what lies underneath its hood. Although the phone doesn’t feature the iPhone X-like notch, it does come with a similar orientation for the dual camera setup positioned vertically on the upper left corner of the phone’s back.

Performance, Storage and Battery

With the Zenfone Max Pro M1, Asus appears to have performance pretty much sorted. The smartphone packs in the best of both worlds – an efficient processor with ample amount of RAM. The Snapdragon 636 processor which was introduced with the Redmi Note 5 Pro has been fitted in this offering from Asus. This processor is currently the most powerful mid-range SoC offered by Qualcomm, it is also highly efficient and therefore offers a comparatively longer battery life. Talking about battery, the phone definitely doesn’t slack in this department with its mammoth 5,000mAh battery unit. This battery can easily last you well over a day. Stay tuned as we update you with more stats about its battery life in our Full Review. As far as storage is concerned, the phone is offered in 3GB+32GB and a 4GB+64GB variant. Both variants will come with a triple slot SIM tray, allowing for memory expansion without compromising on your second SIM.

Camera and Software

The Zenfone Max Pro M1 features a dual-camera setup on the rear comprising of a 13-megapixel sensor coupled with a secondary 5-megapixel depth sensing sensor. This means that the phone, in collaboration with some software tricks is capable of capturing images with good detail. On the front, the phone has an 8-megapixel sensor for capturing selfies and will also double-up to aid in recognising the user for the face unlock feature. On the software front, the company has finally heard its users loud and clear and decided to ship the phone with stock Android. With this inclusion, the phone will be clear to get software updates more quickly and be free from bloatware. Out of the box, the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 runs on Android 8.1 out of the box.

What makes it special?

The Zenfone Max Pro M1 may seem like an offering from every other brand looking to mark its presence in India, however the company has addressed quite a few issues with this product.

To start with, the large battery. It is huge! No really. With its 5,000mAh battery unit, you can stay away from that charging cable for much longer than usual. It also means you can consume more video content and games without running around for a charger.

Secondly, the aesthetic body design. Asus has managed to fit in that mammoth of a battery in a rather slim body. In fact, the company brags it to be the slimmest phone with a battery that big and sure may be! It does feel quite sleek to hold, keeping in mind the massive battery.

Lastly, if you are an audiophile, the Zenfone Max Pro M1 will certainly be something you’d like. The phone comes with a 5-magnet loudspeaker with NXP Smart Amplifier technology. In addition to that, the retail box also includes a passive Max-box amplifier (an acoustic amplifying device) which boosts the audio experience. To sum it up, the phone can provide a great audio experience both when you connect a headphone into its 3.5mm headphone jack or through its speaker setup.

As for the pricing, the phone starts from Rs. 10,999 for the 3GB variant. For the 4GB + 64GB variant, it costs Rs. 12,999. The top-end variant of the phone that has 6GB RAM + 64GB, it is priced at Rs. 14,999 but it isn’t launched yet, the company plans to launch it soon.
