Wireless charging has been around for a while, but the technology has been limited to a few flagships, and its notoriously slow charging speeds have hindered its widespead adoption. However, as with any technology, wireless charging has evolved, and today we have smartphones which charge as fast wirelessly as they can with a wired charger.

Apple and Samsung were among the early adopters of wireless charging, while Xiaomi jumped on the bandwagon a couple of years ago. The most recent entrant into the wireless charging arena is OnePlus. If you are planning to buy a smartphone in India with this feature, we have curated this list of the top 5 wireless charging phones you can buy.

What is wireless charging?

Wireless charging is on its way to become a standard feature in future

Wireless charging is as easy as placing your phone on the charging mat or stand

Before we get to to the best phones that support wireless charging, let’s understand what exactly wireless charging is. In the simplest of terms, wireless charging eliminates the need for plugging in a cable to charge your phone. Wireless charging eliminates a whole step, as it simply requires you to place your phone on the charging pad or stand, which is already plugged in and placed on your nightstand or work desk.

More technically speaking, wireless charging is a technology that uses electromagnetic induction to transfer charge from the charger to the phone battery. Which brings us to our next section.

How does wireless charging work?

So, how does wireless charging work? As mentioned before, the technology works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. Simply speaking, in wireless charging power is created by passing an electrical current through two coils to create an electromagnetic field.

When the receiving magnetic plate with copper coil on the smartphone comes in contact with or within a specified range of transmitter on the wireless charger, the magnetic field generates an electrical current within the device. This current is then converted into direct current (DC), which ultimately charges the phone battery.

What are wireless charging standard?

There are two kinds of wireless charging standards – Qi and Powermat. While the former is used by major smartphone brands, the latter was used by some franchises like Starbucks to enable customers to charge their phones on the go. The Powermat is no longer operational, but the Qi continues to be in the market.

Developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) for inductive charging over distances of up to 40mm, Qi is a standard used by most smartphones makers. Qi has three separate power specifications including low power (5W to 15W), medium power (up to 120W) and high power (1Kw). These are intended for mobile devices, monitors or laptops and heavy-duty devices like kitchen utensils, respectively.
