The Indian smartphone market is snowballing into a huge industry as people are shifting from feature phones to smartphones. At a time when Chinese smartphone makers are booming, an Indian brand has segwayed into the market with an impressive offering. Billion is the brand that offers a range of Made for India products across multiple categories, including home appliances, clothing and more.
The Billion Capture+ is the first smartphone by the brand and it looks quite promising in the mid-budget segment. Capture+ aims to differentiate itself purely on the merit of better specifications and features. Consumers have now begun to opt for phones with rich specifications with high value for money rather than just blindly buying a mediocre offering from a good brand. This behaviour will be influential in bringing an inflection point which might help new brands like Billion in India.
The Capture+ is modestly priced at Rs. 12,999 for the 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant and Rs. 10,999 for the 3GB RAM/32GB storage variant. Considering the specifications and features, the pricing is quite low in comparison to its other competitors. For instance, the Mi A1 and the Moto G5S Plus both come with almost the same specifications and features but are priced higher than the Capture +. Thus, in terms of value for money, this phone by Billion seems like a clear winner. Let’s take a look at what the phone has to offer:
Hardware Design & Display
On the hardware front, the smartphone looks quite sturdy and well-built. The rear panel houses the dual-camera setup, dual-tone LED flash, fingerprint sensor and branding of Billion along with the tagline, ‘Made in India, Made for India’. The speakers and USB Type-C port are positioned on the bottom whereas the headphone jack sits on the top. The phone feels good to hold and is not slippery as well.
The Capture+ rocks a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display bearing a pixel density of 401PPI. It looks sharp and offers a good output when viewing multimedia content. The brightness levels are sufficient for most light conditions. The screen is further enhanced by a 2.5D curved glass and offers a better user experience.
The dual-camera setup has been a trend since the past year, it has been offered in most flagships and a few mid-budget smartphones too. But Billion has taken it to the next level by offering a dual-camera setup at this price point. The Capture+ comes with two 13-megapixel shooters, both of which combine together to click excellent pictures. Owing to the two cameras, the smartphone offers various advanced features such as depth effect. The camera UI also lets you adjust the level of depth effect while clicking pictures. The rear sensor has got auto-focus with PDAF (Phase Detection Auto-Focus) which offers a sharp image quality. On the front, there is an 8-megapixel shooter which does its job pretty well. It has also got all the necessary software features such as beautification mode to make your selfies look good.
Performance, Storage & Software
It is one of the best smartphones in its price point with regards to performance. The smartphone comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset which is a powerful SoC. The phone has two different variants when it comes to RAM. One is a 3GB model and the other variant has 4GB of RAM. The combination of a fast processor and higher RAM ensures that the performance is seamless and offers no lags.
The Capture+ is offered in two internal storage variants: 32GB and 64GB. But you can also expand the storage conveniently with the help of a microSD card till up to 128GB.
The phone comes with Android 7.1.2 Nougat and offers a complete stock OS experience. Most smartphones in this price range have custom ROM built on top, which are plagued with bloatware. We can also expect quick security patches and Android updates from Billion, given that it offers stock Android OS. For someone looking to get a good combination of hardware and software, the Capture+ might be your best bet as of now.
Battery & Connectivity
The Billion Capture+ comes with a 3500mAh battery pack which promises to last throughout the day. In comparison, the Mi A1 boasts of a 3080mAh battery unit and the Moto G5S Plus has a battery capacity of just 3000mAh. Even the Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor is quite efficient in handling the battery. Moreover, the phone supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 which enables it to charge faster through the USB Type-C port in the phone. It is a welcome change to see Type-C support for a phone of this price range, which other similar smartphones lack. Even the standby time of the device is pretty good.
On the connectivity front, the smartphone has got a USB Type-C port, 3.5 mm headphone jack, 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth v4.1.
At a point where most smartphones in this price range are from foreign brands, this is a Made in India product that packs a solid punch. It has all the right elements to emerge as a winner in this price range. In almost all the aspects, the Capture+ proves to be a better alternative than the rest of the phones in this segment. Hoping for more such products from Billion which are high on specifications and offer absolute value for money.
