Xiaomi launched its first gaming-centric smartphone, the Black Shark in China last year. Today the company debuted its third gaming device, the Black Shark 2 in its home country. Apart from being a gaming phone, the Black Shark 2 seems to be an all-around flagship as well. Let’s delve into the technical specs and features of the device:
Display & Design:
On the display front, the Black Shark 2 has the same FHD+ resolution display with an AMOLED panel. However, the device features a slightly larger screen measuring 6.39-inches. The Black Shark 2 comes with a pressure-sensitivity technology called Magic Press that works similar to Apple’s 3D Touch. It is ideal for triggering in-game functions and other actions. Design-wise, the Black Shark 2 ditches the trendy notch design and instead has thick bezels at the top and bottom. It flaunts a metal unibody design, and the rear panel features an LED logo that has RGB customisation for different gaming effects. The Black Shark 2 is equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner for unlocking the device. The gaming device comes in two colour options – Shadow Black and Frozen Silver.
Despite being primarily a gaming device, the Black Shark 2 features a dual rear camera comprising of a 48MP primary sensor accompanied by a 12MP secondary sensor. The device is fitted with a 20MP shooter on the front for clicking selfies. The camera is capable of recording 4K as well as slow-motion videos.
Under the hood, the Black Shark 2 houses Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 855 processor based on 7nm architecture along with an Adreno 640 GPU. The chipset is paired with up to 12GB RAM and offers up to 256GB internal memory. The device is integrated with Liquid Cooling 3.0 technology that aids in dissipating heat and thermal throttling. The company claims that the technology reduces the CPU’s core temperature by up to 14-degrees. On the software front, the Black Shark 2 runs Android 9 Pie based BlackShark OS. It features a ‘Ludicrous Mode’ responsible for driving CPU power into the game and ensuring that it is not wasted on any other app.
Battery & Connectivity:
The Black Shark 2 draws its power from a 4,000mAh battery unit with support for up to 27W fast charging. On the connectivity front, the device is able to connect to an external display via an HDMI cable. It comes with an ‘X-shaped’ unique antenna design for better reception. Other connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB Type-C and dual-frequency GPS.
Pricing & Availability:
The 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 128GB variants are priced at 3,199 Yuan (~Rs 32,700) and 3,499 Yuan (~Rs 35,800) respectively. The 8GB + 256GB model carries a price tag of 3,799 Yuan (~Rs 38,800), while the top end 12GB + 256GB variant retails at 4,199 Yuan (!Rs 42,900).
