BMW iX vs. BMW i4 Electric Comparison: Which BMW EV is Right for You?

The competition in the electric vehicle market has always been concentrated towards the bottom range and mid range cars. Marquee German manufacturers always seemed to stay away from the electric vehicle game until now. Big banner BMW has decided to join the EV race by launching a couple of models. Here we look at two of them, the iX and the iBMW i4. Both cars are powerful, have solid batteries and good range. So much so that you might feel that you’re sitting in a petrol engine car, performance wise. With 0-100 kmph figures that put most conventional ICE engine automobiles to shame, these two Beemers mean serious business. So what’s the difference between the BMW iX and the iBMW i4? BMW iX: The BMW iX has an average ex showroom price of 1.16 Crore. The on-road price is dependent upon the city where you buy it, because each state has its own road tax, and registration fee. 

BMW i4: This car has an average ex showroom price of 69.90 Lakh. Once again, the on-road price is dictated by the city where this car has been purchased. Each state levies its own taxes.

Design

Both cars are extremely futuristic in terms of looks. BMW has left no stone unturned in making sure that these cars both look drop dead gorgeous. You’ll be spoilt for choice when you look at these two models. 

BMW iX: This car has a panoramic sunroof, roof-mounted antenna, and body-colored bumpers. You get LED headlamps, which turn on and off automatically, and change from high beam to low beam on their own as well. These headlights are curve adaptive, and you get a set of DRLs as well. You get an LED tail lamp and integrated turn signal mirrors and body coloured side mirrors. This car has a massive kidney-grille up front, proudly stating that it is a BMW. It has an iDrive 8 infotainment system with a 12.3” digital gauge display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen display. Apple CarPlay® and Android™ Auto integration 5G Wi-Fi hotspot.

BMW i4:  This car has an electronically adjustable sunroof, roof mounted antenna, body colored bumpers and a chrome finish exhaust pipe. You get LED headlights and tail lamps, and there are a set of DRLs as well. You get LED fog lamps as standard. This car too has a huge kidney grille right up front, so the fact that it is a Beemer is instantly recognizable. It has an iDrive 8 infotainment system with a 12.3” digital gauge display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen display. BMW iX:  This car is available in 5 interesting colors, namely Individual Aventurin Red metallic, Mineral White, Phytonic Blue, Sophisto Grey Brilliant Effect and Black Sapphire Metallic.

BMW i4: This car is available in 3 colors, Black Sapphire Metallic, Mineral White metallic and Skyscraper Grey metallic.

Performance

Both cars are cracker performers. The fact that they run on batteries does nothing to hamper their performance. These electric vehicles are fast enough to put conventional ICE engine cars to shame. 

BMW iX: This car goes from 0 to 60 in 4.6 seconds with 516 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque. The iX includes standard all-wheel drive and two electric motors. Riding modes are Sport mode, efficiency mode, and personal mode.

BMW i4: The baseline i4 eDrive40 offers 335 hp, 317 lb-ft of torque, and a 0–60 time of 5.5 seconds. The more powerful i4 M50 delivers 536 hp and 586 lb-ft of torque and takes you from 0 to 60 in as little as 3.7 seconds. Riding modes are Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport

Range and Charging

BMW iX: The iX xDrive50 SAV® is expected to offer roughly 300 miles of range on a full charge. The same is true for the i4 xDrive40; however, the iX will provide more power along the way. Using a BMW Wall-Box charger, you can charge this car from 0-100% in 12 hours. If you use EVGo charging stations, you can charge up to 80% of your lithium-ion battery in 40 minutes. Using Public DC Fast Charging, you can restore up to 88 miles in ten minutes with the iX.

BMW i4: The BMW i4 has a range of 240 miles on a full charge. Using a BMW wall-box charger, you can charge the i4 from 0% to 100% in nine hours or less. If you use EVGo charging stations, you can charge up to 80% of your lithium-ion battery in 40 minutes. Using Public DC Fast Charging, you can restore up to 90 miles in ten minutes with the i4.

BMW i4: Motortrend has reviewed the i4 and claims that you won’t even realize you’re driving an electric vehicle.
