BSNL 5G rollout to begin in August 2023, affordable 5G plans expected

Highlights

  • BSNL will rollout 5G services by August 15th, 2023
  • It will be based on non-standalone architecture
  • It is expected to offer affordable 5G plans.

BSNL 5G services will begin in August 2023. The state-owned telecom operator is expected to offer affordable 5G plans. Apart from BSNL, private telecom operators such as Airtel, Jio, and Vi will also rollout 5G services in the country. While BSNL will be launching its 5G services next, Airtel has already started its 5G networks in some cities. Jio will start offering 5G services by the end of this month, but Vi hasn’t said when it will offer 5G services.

Starting 5G services next year is an ambitious announcement by BSNL since it has only just started rolling out 4G LTE services. Union Minister of Communications, Ashwini Vaishnaw said that BSNL will be able to start 5G networks in the promised timeframe since the transition from 4G to 5G is not long.

BSNL to launch 5G services by August 2023

Vaishnaw said that around 200 cities will be able to access 5G networks in the next six months. Efforts will be made over the next two years to launch 5G services in 80 to 90 percent of the country. He added that BSNL’s 5G services will start from August 15th, 2023, onwards.

BSNL’s 5G services will be based on a non-standalone architecture (NSA). This will allow the telecom operator to make full use of its existing network infrastructure with lower investment. While BSNL is expected to offer affordable 5G tariffs, the exact details of the 5G plans are likely to be confirmed next year.

The government approved a Rs 1.64 lakh crore booster shot for the loss-making BSNL in July, in a bid to upgrade its network to 4G while easing its balance sheet. The four-year turnaround strategy includes both cash and non-cash component.

5G services launched in India

On October 1st, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G in India at the ongoing Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2022. Leading telecom operators like Airtel, Jio, and Vi demonstrated the use case of 5G technology at the event. Airtel’s 5G services are now available in eight cities, such as Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Siliguri, and Varanasi. The company is expected to confirm its 5G tariffs later this month. Reliance Jio will begin its 5G services around Diwali (October 24th) in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai.
