BYD is planning a retail expansion in India ahead of the Atto 3’s launch

  • The BYD Atto 3 will officially reach consumers by early 2023
  • BYD already sells the Atto 3 in some markets, with India being the latest addition
  • The Atto 3 will compete primarily with the Tata Nexon EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric

The BYD Atto 3 is all set to reach the Indian markets, making it the China-based automaker’s second EV in the country, following the BYD e6. BYD’s latest offering is expected to take on the Tata Nexon EV, which is the country’s top-selling electric car at the moment. BYD will assemble the new EV at its dedicated plant at Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, which can churn out around 10,000 EVs each year.

Speaking on the retail outlets that will carry the Atto 3 when it is launched in early 2023, Sanjay Gopalakrishnan, Senior VP of BYD India’s Electric Passenger Vehicle Business said, “On the distribution side we will be having about 23 showrooms by the end of this year and 50 next year.” At the moment, BYD India only has around seven retail outlets across India.

While the Sriperumbudur plant can produce up to 10,000 units annually, Gopalakrishnan said that the company is willing to increase the capacity if the need arises.

A tough challenge for the BYD Atto 3

BYD’s new electric SUV has all the makings of a top seller, although it would be a big ask considering Tata Motors’ dominance in the Indian electric car market.

The company recently introduced its most affordable EV, the Tiago, starting at an introductory price of Rs 8.49 lakhs. The Atto 3 will also have to contend with the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric, which is a high-range offering, capable of delivering up to 452 kilometres of driving time on a full charge.
