  • BYD will officially showcase the Atto 3 at the 2023 Auto Expo
  • The EV could be available in two battery configurations
  • BYD speculates that EVs will capture 25% of the Indian automotive industry by 2030

Automaker BYD is gearing up for the release of the Atto 3 in India, with the company sharing more details on its launch schedule. While we already know that the EV would appear at the 2023 Auto Expo, we’re now learning that the EV will be officially unveiled between October and December this year.

The Atto 3 leverages the company’s E3 platform, and will be assembled at BYD’s dedicated plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Speaking to Autocar Professional, Senior VP of BYD India’s Electric Vehicle Passenger Business, Sanjay Gopalakrishnan said that sales of the new EV will commence early next year. “We will expand the network gradually and the top 25 cities should be covered in a year along with charging infrastructure,” Gopalakrishnan was quoted as saying.

According to sources cited by the publication, the Atto 3 could be priced close to Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom). It’s worth pointing out that the Atto 3 will reach India via the semi-knocked down assembly method. Similarly, BYD’s e6 MPV — which was limited to commercial buyers in India — opened up for private sales recently. This utility vehicle will carry an ex-showroom price of Rs 29.15 lakh.

BYD speculates that the Indian EV segment will make up for at least 25% of the cars sold in India by 2030. While this seems like an optimistic vision, the arrival of the Tata Nexon EV and the upcoming Mahindra XUV 400 could accelerate the Indian EV business further.

BYD Atto 3 features, specifications

The Atto 3 will be available in Standard Range and Extended Range versions, with the latter being 60 kg heavier. BYD claims both models can achieve 0 to 100 kmph speeds in just 7.3 seconds aided by the 200PS front-wheel drive powertrain.

Features like a panoramic sunroof, seven airbags, a 12.8-inch rotating in-car infotainment system and large air vents offer a mix of luxury and optimum safety. Customers can expect 410 km of range from the Standard Range Atto 3. The Extended Range version of the EV can run for up to 480 km on a full charge.
