One of the films which were hyped quite a lot in 2022 but turned out to be a box office bomb was Ranveer Singh’s starrer ‘Cirkus.’ After a disappointing theatrical run, the film is now set to stream on the OTT platform this month.

Cirkus: Cast and Crew
Based on William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, the screenplay of Cirkus is written by Yunus Sajawal. The film is directed by Rohit Shetty and jointly produced by Rohit Shetty Productionz and T-Series. Besides Ranveer Singh, the film stars Varun Sharma, Pooja Hegde and Jacqueline Fernandez.
The cinematography has been managed by Jomon T. John and the editing has been done by Bunty Nagi. Music for the film has been given by Amar Mohile. Reliance Entertainment has bagged the distribution rights for the film.
Cirkus: Trailer and Premise
Presented as a comedy film, Cirkus is a remake of Angoor, a 1982 Bollywood release, which was also based on the popular play. The premise of the film revolves around two sets of identical twins who are accidentally separated at birth. Several years later, they are coincidentally in the same town, and there is a lot of confusion as people mistake them for each other.

Cirkus: Box Office Report
The film was released in theatres as a Christmas special on December 23, 2022; however, it failed to impress. Reviewers pointed out flaws related to the VFX, story, screenplay, performances, soundtrack, production values, and more. The film’s performance at the box office was also below average. Made at a massive budget of approximately Rs. 150 crores, the film was termed as one of the biggest commercial failures, as it collected only about Rs. 57 crores worldwide, out of which Rs. 38.21 crore was from India and Rs. 19.03 crore was from overseas distribution.

Sharing their thoughts, several critics expressed their displeasure about the film. Film Companion’s Anupama Chopra said, “Cirkus is a mess”, while Taran Adarsh stated that Cirkus “Lacks entertainment and humour you associate with a #RohitShetty film…” The review posted on Bollywood Hungama reported, “Cirkus suffers from poor writing and forced humour, and appeals only in bits and pieces.”
