The Indian government has approved Covishield and Covaxin vaccines for emergency usage recently, hinting that the vaccination drive against the novel virus is about to begin in the country. In order to make the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines a seamless process, the government had announced the Co-WIN app back in December 2020. If you’re wondering what the Co-WIN app is, how to register for the COVID-19 vaccine, and what documents are required, we’ve got answers to all your questions
However, before we proceed further, bear in mind that the app is in the development stage as of now and is not available for download yet. It will be made available via Google Play Store as well as Apple App Store once it’s ready. Here’s everything you need to know about the app and how to register for the COVID-19 vaccine.
What is Co-WIN app?
Co-WIN is an app launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in December 2020. The app is an upgraded version of the eVIN (Electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network), which is a digital platform designed to effectively roll out and scale up the mechanism for the COVID-19 vaccine distribution system.
The government stated that the upcoming app will have five modules including administration, registration, vaccination, beneficiary, and report. The registration for the vaccination can be done through the registration module.
Co-WIN app: how does it work?
As mentioned before, the Co-WIN app will have five modules. The Administration module is for administrators to track the information provided by users, who will then arrange vaccination sessions. The Registration module is where users will actually register for vaccination by providing their photo identity proof.
The Vaccination module will verify the users’ details and update vaccination status, whereas, the Beneficiary Acknowledgement module will inform beneficiaries post verification of the details. Lastly, the Report module will show data like how many people attended a particular vaccination session, and more.
What documents are required to register for Co-WIN app?
In order to register for the vaccine on Co-WIN app, individuals will be required to provide their photo ID proof. Some of the government-approved photo ID proofs are Aadhar Card, Driving License, PAN Card, and passport, among others.
How to register for the COVID-19 vaccine using Co-WIN app
As mentioned before, the Co-WIN app is not yet available for download but will be made available soon. Here’s how to register for the COVID-19 vaccine on the Co-WIN app:
- Initiate self-registration and upload photo ID proof
- Upload government photo identity documents or register through AADHAAR authentication
- Once registered, you’ll receive date and time allotment for the vaccination
- The app will send an SMS to reach the vaccination site on the allotted date and time
Which vaccines are part of the Co-WIN app?
As mentioned before, the Indian government has approved two vaccines for emergency usage in the country. The first vaccine is Covishield, which has been developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca. The second vaccine is Covaxin, which has been developed by the indigenous biotechnology company based in Hyderabad.
Both these vaccines have been approved by Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) based on recommendations by a COVID-19 Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).
Who will get the COVID-19 vaccine first in India?
The government has announced a few priority groups, who will be given the vaccine on priority as they are at higher risk. The first group is healthcare professionals, followed by individuals over 50 years of age and under 50 years with comorbid conditions. The above-50 years of age group has been divided into two sub-groups – over 60 years and between 50-60 years. The first sub-group will be given priority over the 50-60 age group.
Where will you get vaccinated?
The Indian government has allotted various vaccine sites for different priority groups. These sites include fixed session sites, outreach session sites, and special mobile teams. The fixed session site comprises government and private health facilities, where a medical officer or doctor is available at hand.
The outreach session site includes community locations like school and community halls. Lastly, special mobile teams will be formed to provide the vaccine in remote areas and international border areas.
What is the cost of the COVID-19 vaccine in India?
As of now, the Union Health Minister Dr Harshvardhan has revealed that the vaccination will be free for frontline workers, but didn’t reveal the cost to the general public.
