OPPO’s ColorOS 12 based on Android 12 has launched today for global users. The feature-rich UI delivers an experience that is closer to stock Android 12. The company has also rolled out the ColorOS 12 public beta to its users.
ColorOS 12 was announced first in China last month. In OPPO’s home market, the OS update is available for both OPPO and OnePlus smartphones. ColorOS 12 will be released for the Find X3 series, OnePlus 9, and OnePlus 9 Pro this month in China. As far as India is concerned, the ColorOS 12 update rollout will begin in November for the Reno6 series of smartphones.

ColorOS 12 based Android 11 upgrade will first come to the Find X3 Pro 5G for global users in October. The Reno 6 series and Find X2 will be the first OPPO phones in India to receive the latest software update in November.

Some of the A-series smartphones such as the OPPO A55, A54, and A16 that debuted in this year are not mentioned in the list of eligible devices for ColorOS 12. There is a possibility that the company may release ColorOS 12 based on Android 11 for these devices. However, there is no official confirmation on it yet.
OPPO has updated its software upgrade policy for its smartphones. The company confirmed that for its devices released from 2019 and onwards, it will be providing three major Android updates for Find X lineup, two Android updates for the Reno lineup, F-series, and some of the A-series of phones. It will be providing only a single Android update for A-series smartphones with low memory. In addition, the Find X, Reno, and F branded phones will be treated with regular security patch updates for four years, whereas these updates will be available for three years for the A-lineup.
ColorOS 12: top features
ColorOS 12 is built on the company’s Infinite Design concept, which delivers a lightweight, clean, and customisable user experience. On top of that, it offers softer icons, animations, and an intuitive information framework for different languages and cultures. ColorOS 12 supports 67 global languages, out of which are 13 are major Indian languages.
OPPO claims that it has incorporated many stock Android features such as the Wallpaper-based Theming system in Material You. It changes the theme of the system based on the colour of the wallpaper. It offers a renewed Phone Manager app that assists in decluttering the phone from unnecessary files and apps. ColorOS offers some new features such as the Screen Translate option in the sidebar, 3-finger translate powered by Google Lens, Background Stream for continue playing streaming content in the background, conversation widgets, and Dark Mode options.
The Quantum Animation Engine 3.0 promises smoother animations in ColorOS 12 while launching, closing, and scrolling apps. OPPO has dealt with issues of lags and stutters after prolonged usage, especially in anti-fragmentation and intelligent resource allocation. Hence, ColorOS 12 reduces memory usage by 30 percent and battery consumption by 20 percent on average.
ColorOS 12 improved security through features like Privacy Dashboards, Microphone and Camera indicators, Approximate Location Sharing, Private System, Private Safe, App Lock, and others. OPPO has deployed servers in multiple locations across the globe. OPPO claims that it stores user data in non-plain text format in nearby servers and is transmitted through a proprietary protocol.
