After Coolpad launched Coolpad Cool 1 late last year which was among the first devices to sport a dual camera setup, the company has now launched a new contender – The Cool Play 6. Like its sibling, the Cool Play 6 also sports a dual camera setup together with an impressive battery backup. Is that all Coolpad has to offer with this phone? Let’s find out.
Design – Matching the trend with an all metal body
Coolpad, similar to many of its other Chinese counterparts has its new device sport a sleek smartphone built solidly out of metal giving it a premium feel. The device also appears ergonomic and quite pretty to look at. At the back is a fingerprint sensor circumscribed in a metallic ring – nothing too fancy. On the front is 5.5-inch display below which are three capacitive buttons which are thankfully backlit, unlike the Coolpad Note 5 Lite. The right edge of the device is where the power button and volume rockers are situated, which also appear pretty robust.
Display and Specifications – Impressive specifications for the price tag
The Cool Play 6 features a 5.5-inch IPS LCD display that sports a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels which roughly translates to a decent pixel density of about 400PPI. Unlike its counterparts like LG and Xiaomi which are striving to bring bezel-less displays to their budget smartphones, Coolpad couldn’t pull this off with the Play 6. The display is accompanied by pretty substantial bezels on all sides of the display.
On the specification front, the phone doesn’t fail to impress, at least from the spec-sheet. The Cool Play 6 features a Snapdragon 653 processor from Qualcomm that is built on a 28nm processor. This processor competes with the Snapdragon 625 found on the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. The 625 being a more battery efficient processor stays defeated when compared to the raw processing power that the 653 has to offer. This is due to the four A72 cores clocked at 1.95Ghz and its other four A53 cores clocking at around 1.5Ghz. To keep up with all the muscle power that this device has to offer, Coolpad has also bundled a 4,060mAh battery unit with the Play 6. This battery can keep the device up and run for up to 300 hours on standby. Not only that but the company also claims that the device can withstand up to 2 days on a single charge with moderate usage.
In terms of storage, the smartphone will feature 64GB of internal storage paired with a whopping 6GB of RAM. The company has also decided to make the device future-proof by including a USB Type-C connector at the bottom for both data transfer and charging purposes. In terms of software, the Cool Play 6 will run Android 7.1.1 out of the box and Coolpad has promised to roll out Android O via an OTA update by the year end.
Camera – Dual Cameras!
Just like its sibling from last year, the Cool Play 6 also features a dual camera setup on the rear. Both cameras are 13MP sensors manufactured by Sony and are coupled with a dual LED flash for capturing images in low light. Just like the dual camera setup found on the likes of Huawei devices, one of the cameras is an RGB sensor while the other is a monochrome sensor, both bearing an aperture of f/2.0. The rear cameras also allow capturing of videos in 4K which is quite rare to find on a budget smartphone. On the front, there sits a front facing selfie camera having an 8MP sensor bearing an aperture of f/2.2. The rear camera also features some neat tricks that it can pull off like the bokeh mode.
Pricing and Availability – Attractive price in exchange for good specifications
The Coolpad Cool Play 6 carries a price tag of Rs. 14,999 and will be available in two colour variants – Black and Gold. The device will be exclusively available through Amazon India starting September 4, 2017.
