Dell, the third largest laptop manufacturer in the world has added a premium quality device to its lineup in India – the Dell XPS 15. The laptop was first unveiled alongside two of its other siblings at CES held this year. The laptop sports a sturdy build and a sleek overall structure. Let’s have a look at what the company has to offer with this brand new product.

Design and Display

The first noticeable thing about this laptop is its tiny overall footprint which is pretty impressive for a 15.6-inch device. According to the company, the XPS 15 sports the smallest footprint for a display its size, owing to its super thin bezels. The outer shell of the laptop is constructed from aluminium whereas the internals is constructed from fibre to keep the device cool even under intensive use.

The Full HD display of the device is quite an eye-catcher, sporting a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Dell also claims the screen of the laptop to be able to cover a large colour gamut making it capable of reproducing more vibrant colours. The display panel also gets brighter than other displays; at around 350 nits, screen content is legible even if the laptop is used outdoors. Contrary to convention, the laptop features an HD camera below the display in order to eliminate the bezels on the top.

Performance and Storage

Underneath its hood, the laptop features the seventh generation core i7 processor made by Intel and clocks up to 3.8GHz. For all gaming and media intensive purposes, the device is also packed with the powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 4GB GDDR5 graphics memory. This is coupled with either 8GB or 16GB of DDR4 RAM which can be further expanded, making multitasking on the device a delight.

As far as storage is concerned, Dell ships the laptop with either a 256GB or 512GB PCIe Solid State Drive. With the implementation of SSDs, boot up and read/write time on this offering are very little further complementing the user experience.

Battery and Connectivity

The Dell XPS 15 draws its power from either a 56Wh or a 97Wh battery pack located underneath its body which the company claims as to have the longest battery life on a 15-inch laptop. As far as wireless connectivity goes, the product features dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth. The laptop is also capable of automatically detecting, classifying and prioritizing network traffic ensuring the most important data takes priority over the less urgent applications. This is achieved through its new Killer 1535 Wireless-AC adapter.

As for the connectivity ports on this device, it features two USB 3.0 ports, one Thunderbolt 3 port, a VGA port and an HDMI port. Since the device is a notebook and in order to keep it super slim at just 1.8kgs – which is slightly heavier than a MacBook Air- the optical drive has been left out. The laptop however still features a card reader to quickly transfer photos and videos from your DSLR cameras and Mobile phones supporting SD cards.

Software and Audio

The Dell XPS 15 comes pre-installed with Windows 10 Home, Home Plus or the Pro version depending on the variant you select. The device is also offered with Microsoft Office with a 30-day trial or the Student version varying with which variant you select. Dell also bundles a 12-month McAfee LiveSafe subscription with this offering.

In terms of audio, the laptop rocks a stereo speaker set accompanied with dual microphones. The speakers are also backed up by Waves MaxxAudio Pro for an enhanced sound experience.

Price

The laptop is offered in four price variants starting at Rs. 1,17,990 and the top model priced at Rs. 1,43,990. Dell also offers a 1-year warranty with onsite service and accidental damage cover.
