Indian fans of popular American TV shows such as Game of Thrones, The Succession, and The Last of Us will be disappointed to learn that these shows will no longer be available on Disney+ Hotstar after March 31. The Indian OTT platform will no longer feature content from HBO, as announced by Disney+ Hotstar’s official Twitter handle. Starting from April 1, Indian viewers will no longer be able to watch these popular shows on the platform.
The decision to remove HBO content from Disney+ Hotstar has surprised many of the platform’s subscribers, particularly those who have dedicated viewers of American television shows. The partnership between HBO and Disney+ Hotstar, established in 2015, was instrumental in the platform’s rapid growth in subscribers. With this move, Disney+ Hotstar faces yet another major blow, having recently lost the streaming rights to IPL.
The Last of Us
For now, the fate of these shows in India is unclear. No platform has confirmed these shows’ availability, and HBO is also maintaining radio silence. Some rumours are suggesting that Amazon Prime Video may stream all HBO content as a new channel, similar to Discover, Hoichoi and Lionsgate content but the subscription cost and any other plans regarding this remain sketchy.
