Driving License in India: Step by Step Guide on How to Renew License Offline and Online

An Indian driving license is essential to be able to legally drive a car, bike, or any other kind of transport on Indian roads. Just knowing how to drive does not mean you can simply head out on the road. A license allows Indian citizens to drive a motorized vehicle on any public road without any supervision. The license is issued by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA). Any person above the age of 18 years can apply for a permanent driving license.

There are four kinds of driving licences in India – learner’s licence, permanent driving licence, commercial driving licence, and licence to drive internationally. In this article, we will focus on how to renew a permanent driving license.

Why Is It important to renew your driving license?

Simply put, if you want to drive a car or ride a bike on Indian roads, you must have a valid driving license. The Motor Vehicles Act, 1998 prohibits individuals from operating any type of motor vehicle, be it a car, bike, or heavy vehicle, without a valid driving license. The violation of this rule is considered a punishable offence which can lead to a hefty fine or even imprisonment for up to 3 years. An Indian driving licence has a validity of 20 years till the individual reaches the age of 50. You can apply for a renewal one month before and even after the expiry.

Moreover, a driving license is also mandatory to claim insurance in the event of an accident. Without a valid driving license, you will not be able to settle a claim with your insurance company for damages. The driving license renewal application can be sent when your driving license is a month away from expiry. The application will not be entertained if sent before the one-month timeframe. If you do not apply for a renewal for more than five years after the date of expiry, you will have to apply for a fresh license and undergo all the formalities and tests again. The previous license will lose all validity.
