Essential teases “radically different” smartphone with a super tall form factor

On: October 9, 2019

Ever since the first Essential Phone PH-1 was launched a little over two years ago, people have been waiting patiently to catch a glimpse of its successor. The company has been through numerous ups and downs ever since, and an updated Essential Phone seemed improbable until now. However, Essential CEO Andy Rubin has now teased an upcoming smartphone with a radical new design through a series of tweets.

Essential Phone 2 Project Gem-

Rubin posted a sneak peak of the upcoming smartphone on Twitter on Tuesday, and the device has been drawing polarising opinions ever since. The device sports a unique shape and previously unseen color options. The smartphone appears long and sleek and is available in what Rubin calls a GEM colourshift material. This makes the colour appear different when viewed from varying angles. He also confirmed that the device incorporates a radical new interface to accommodate the unique form factor.

Essential is calling this smartphone Project Gem. The device has a remote-like tall form factor and the front is all-screen with thin bezels on the edges. The new UI displays apps as cards to fit the screen. The smartphone also features a punch-hole towards the left side of the display to accommodate the front camera. The rear panel features a large camera setup with a circular dimple housing the fingerprint module along with the voice assistant.

The project is currently in its initial stages and is unlikely to launch anytime soon. Apart from these images, there is no other information available on Project Gem. The rumors of Essential Products working on a small screen device controlled by voice commands were first revealed by Bloomberg last year. The post stated that AI could answer emails and text messages on the user’s behalf, preventing users from staying hooked on to the smartphone. Additional details on Project Gem is expected to surface in the coming weeks.
