Face Unlock Assistive Lighting is Rolling Out to OnePlus 5T: OxygenOS 4.7.6

OnePlus 5T was the first phone by the brand to come with the Face Unlock feature. After the latest update, it is now about to get even better! The smartphone was one of the year’s most unexpected smartphones of the year. That is not only because the OnePlus 5 was launched just 6 months prior to it but also due to some of the unique features that came bundled.

The major highlight of the phone has to be its large bezel-less display spanning 6-inches across. The phone also brings in an upgrade in the optics department replacing the telephoto lens for a better low-light sensor. The selfie camera however remained the same in terms of specifications.

Under the hood, however, there have been quite a few improvements. Which brings us to the second attractive feature of the phone – Face Unlock. This is OnePlus’ take at Apple’s FaceID, but it’s so much more faster! The Face Unlock feature on the OnePlus 5T makes use of the selfie camera to recognise the user to quickly unlock the phone. This however isn’t as reliable as Apple’s FaceID which is why the brand has also added a fingerprint sensor on the rear side of the phone as a fallback option.

The Face Unlock feature that we tested on our review unit worked flawlessly almost every time. However, there were a few occasions where the camera couldn’t sense the face. This was primarily due to lack of ambient light when the phone was used in the dark. OnePlus has fixed this with a new software update. The 5T is being updated to OxygenOS 4.7.6 which will bring in some improvements to the already great Face detection feature that the phone has. To make use of the this new addition, after updating, go to Settings > Security and Lock Screen > Face Unlock  and turn on the  Face Unlock assistive lighting feature.

In addition to this, the phone will also be updated to the December Security patch by Google. The update carries a size of 86MB and is currently rolling out to OnePlus users around the world. To check for the update head over to the Settings > System Updates > Check for Updates.

Ideally the update should show up right away, but in case it doesn’t. Download any VPN application from the Google Play store and choose a Canadian server. You can try the Opera VPN app and do so. Once connected, repeat the process to check for the update.

With this new added feature and further software improvements to the already great phone, the OnePlus 5T truly has deserved to be the best budget flagship device of the year. Stay tuned to the blog to read about our full review coming soon.
