- Facebook has been renamed to Meta
- It is part of a new rebranding exercise
- Its sub-brands like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram will retain their names
Meta Platforms is the new name of Facebook, which is the parent organisation of sub-brands like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. These sub-brands will retain their names after rebranding. By adopting the new name, the company hopes to be seen as a metaverse company. In July, the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said that it is transitioning from a social media brand to a metaverse firm in the next five years or so.
To those who are unaware, a metaverse is used a broad term used for shared virtual digital spaces, which can be accessed through the internet. Some of the examples of digital spaces include virtual reality, augmented reality, and gaming worlds.
Facebook renamed to Meta
Zuckerberg said through an official blogpost that Meta will be an immersive platform, where a person can meet another person in a virtual world. In the metaverse, users will be able to do anything they can imagine like meeting friends and family, work, learn, play, shop, even, and create. It will also offer completely new experiences that cannot be experienced through computers or phones today.
He added that metaverse will let people teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the workplace without commuting, catch up with parents in their living room, or attend a concert with friends. People will be able to do these things through metaverse no matter where they live. He added that it is not about spending more time on screens but spending the same time in a better way.
In the metaverse, all the physical things will turn into holograms designed by creators across the world. The metaverse will be accessible through different kinds of devices such as VR headsets, AR glasses, smartphone apps, computers, and so on.
The metaverse will not be created by one company, but it will be built by creators and developers. Meta’s role will be to accelerate the development of the fundamental technologies, social platforms, and creative tools that will assist in creating the metaverse. Zuckerberg said that privacy and safety will be built into metaverse from the beginning.
