Business cards are slowly becoming obsolete, and while LinkedIn has become the platform of choice for people to post professional updates, Google has a virtual business card feature of its own too. In case you’re unaware, Google’s Add me to Search feature lets you write a snippet about yourself, so that when people search for your name in Google, they see a short bio in which you can highlight your professional achievements.

Google is calling this feature a ‘People Card’, and surprisingly, this is available only in India, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa at the moment. In addition, this feature only works if your language is set to English or Hindi. As this feature starts rolling out in more countries, it’s a good move to create your own Google People card. In this article, we’ll explain how to create your Google people card, edit it and even remove it from search.

How to create your People Card on Google search

 

 

  1. Open Google Chrome and type “Add me to search”
  2. After this, you’ll find the option to “Get started” at the top of the results page. Click on this.
  3. The next window to open will prompt you to fill out all your relevant information, such as your name, location, your job title or description, and a little bit of information about yourself. Fill in all these fields. These are the mandatory fields to fill.
  4. The next few fields such as work, education, hometown, website, and a few others are all optional. You can choose to fill in whichever field you feel is relevant enough to be added to your People Card.
  5. You can also link your social media handles to the people card. These include Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, SoundCloud, Instagram, and even Pinterest.
  6. Google will display the email and phone number associated with your Google account and autofill it into the relevant fields. However, you have the option to not display these pieces of information if you prefer.
  7. After all the information has been provided to Google, the people card will be created and you can check the preview to see if all the information is correctly displayed. If the card suits your needs, you can save it. Your Google people card will now be live and can be found online if you search for your name and information.

How to edit People Card on Google search

Editing your People card on Google search is as easy as adding the card itself. Here are the steps you can implement:

  1. Open Google Chrome and ensure you’re logged in to your Google account.
  2. Type “edit my people card”.
  3. Once the People card shows on your screen, you’ll find the Edit option at the top right corner.
  4. Make the required changes and preview the information shown
  5. Save the changes.
  6. Your edited People card will now appear on Google.

How remove email and mobile number from Google People Card

Contact information that has been provided to Google will be publicly displayed on the People card. You can add your contact information if you want more clients or personnel to be able to reach you. If you want a bit more privacy and don’t want people to have your contact information, you can remove the information as well. Follow these steps.

  1. Open Google Chrome and ensure you’re logged in
  2. Type “edit my people card”
  3. At the top right corner of the next screen, you can find the “Edit” button. Tap on it.
  4. Delete your phone and email details, and leave the relevant fields blank (if you want to remove the contact information).
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and find the “preview” button. Once you find it, select this option.
  6. Check the People card properly and see if your contact information has now been added or removed.
  7. If the changes are to your liking, you can tap on the “Save” button.

How to remove Google People card from search

If you are no longer comfortable with sharing your People card on Google search, here’s what you can do to remove it:

  1. Use your Google search app or the mobile browser, and log into your Google account.
  2. In the search bar, type “edit my people card”.
  3. There will be an option in the next window to remove your People card.
  4. Navigate the screen and find the “Remove my search card from Google” option.
  5. Tap on this option. Your card and all the information shown through it will be removed from Google Search.

While the Google People card can be a great tool to network and better the search results on your work and your name, you do have to be careful when filling out the information. You also have to keep in mind Google’s terms and conditions when you are creating your Google People card. Here are the few things that you must keep in mind when you are using the Google People card.

  1. The information that you fill must be your own. If the information that you’ve provided on your card doesn’t match the work that you actually do, Google could remove the card from Search.
  2. “Hometown” or “profession” are the aspects that you must use to your advantage when generating your Google People card. These are the fields that will be most relevant for people when they searching your name on Google.
  3. Your information must be updated regularly as a Google People card that hasn’t been updated recently could be deemed as inactive by Google, and emoved from the search index.
  4. Your Google People card should be a proper summary of you and your profession. You cannot use pictures that are either misleading or unclear – people should be able to recognize you when they see the image in the Google People card. You cannot mislead other people with the wrong information, especially about your profession and workplace.
  5. You cannot use subjective terms that relate to some form of advertisement. Words such as “best” or “affordable” cannot be used in your Google People card.
  6. The Google People card must not be deragatory or vindictive towards other people or organisations. You should not use language that is demeaning to your previous places of employment or supervisors.
  7. It must not incite behaviour that is illegal or unlawful. No hateful language must be used on display for the Google People card. Profane, vulgar language will not be entertained on the People card.
  8. Intellectual property, as well as privacy rights must be respected on your Google People card. You cannot claim a position or business as your own, if you are not the proprieter of said business. Moreover, you cannot upload images that you don’t have the rights to use or claim.
