Google Health Connect launched: Know what it is, how to use it

  • The Google Health Connect app has been launched
  • The beta version of the app is now available on the Play Store
  • The app is aimed towards health and fitness enthusiasts

Google Health Connect app has been launched in India. Smartwatch and fitness tracker users use different apps to track health data. The Health Connect app serves as a single platform to manage health and fitness data from over 10+ apps. The search engine giant has partnered with Samsung to develop the app.

The Google Health Connect was announced at the Google I/O 2022 developers conference earlier this year. The beta version of the app is now available on the Play Store. Apart from tracking health data, the app also offers centralised privacy controls to see which apps are accessing the data.

Google Health Connect: What is it?

Goolge Health Connect

Goolge Health Connect

In its beta version, Google Health Connect supports apps such as Google Fit: Activity Tracking, Fitbit, Samsung Health, MyFitnessPal: Calorie Counter, Oura, Flo Ovulation & Period Tracker, Lifesum: Health Eating & Diet, Outdooractive: Hiking & Biking, and Proov Insight. The app weighs only 3.3MB.

The Health Connect app is built to reduce users’ dependency on different apps to manage their health data. It allows users to share health and fitness data across Android devices with user consent. The app shows the permissions that are granted to each health and fitness app on the device. Any single permission, including those for heart rate, sleep, steps, calories burned, etc., can be granted or revoked through it. The health data stored via Health Connect can be deleted at any time.

Google Health Connect: How it works?

The purpose of the Health Connect app is to make it possible for health and fitness applications to connect with one another and give users more in-depth health insights. More than 40 data types, which span six categories, are supported by the app’s standardised data schema. This lets the app keep track of things like workouts, sleep habits, and vital signs.

To communicate data between other apps, developers had to use several API connections before the app was created. Each integration, according to Google, was costly to design and maintain. But Health Connect makes it possible for different fitness and health apps to communicate with each other, giving the user better health information.

As mentioned above, Health Connect is in its beta stage. At present, there is no official information on the arrival of the stable version of the app. The search engine giant is currently working on adding partners and new features to Health Connect.
