Google has silently entered into online food ordering space in India with the launch of Areo. It’s an Android app which lets you order food online as well as get home services right at your doorstep. With this move, Google is all set to disrupt the online food delivery market currently ruled by biggies such as Zomato, Swiggy, and Foodpanda.
Currently, Areo is providing these services in two cities – Mumbai and Bengaluru . The search giant has partnered with various local partners to provide these services. For food delivery, the company has joined hands with Freshmenu, Box8, and Faasos. While for home services, on the other hand, the company partnered with UrbanClap and Zimmber. As of now, Areo aggregates services such as food delivery, beauty, home maintenance, chores & cleaning, repairs & installation, and fitness. The app has also listed “Speciality services” which are apparently not available in my location.
In the past couple of months, Google has introduced numerous services in India and now trying to get its feet wet in food delivering space. Well, that makes sense given that CEO Sundar Pichai explained in a keynote (held in 2015) that the company has a vast interest in the Indian market and will soon offer a range of online services to citizens. Last year, the company also introduced first of its kind – toilet locator in partnership with Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD).
Well, coming back to the Areo app. We just downloaded it and gave it a shot. Before that, I should remind you that Google is offering Rs 200 discount (without any min. order limit) for a limited time. The ordering experience was smooth and we received our first order in expected time frame. That, however, wasn’t the case with next order as the orders might have queued up. (Because of the Rs 200 discount).
Edit on 15/04/2017: Google is not offering Rs 200 discount anymore.
