Voice-assisted COVID-19 vaccine bookings via Google Assistant

Google says that it has worked with the government’s CoWin portal to enable integration with Google Assistant for booking end-to-end COVID-19 vaccines. The feature will be available in eight Indian languages including Hindi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu.

All users need to do is search for ‘covid vaccine’ on Google Search and then tap on ‘register easily with Google Assistant’. Once users select the option, it will offer step-by-step voice guidance to book a vaccine slot. Google Assistant will ask a few questions like the beneficiary’s name, date of birth, and other details. The entire process is done on CoWin platform.

With the voice-based vaccine booking feature, Google aims to eliminate complexity while booking vaccines for those who are unfamiliar with using smartphones. The feature will be rolled out in early 2022.

Google Pay gets Hinglish support and bill split feature

Google has also introduced three new updates to its digital wallet platform. Firstly, the payment app will support ‘Hinglish’ language that is a combination of English and Hindi. Additionally, it is also getting voice input support in English and Hindi that will allow users to enter bank account numbers with a voice command. Another key feature for Google Pay is the Bill Split option that will let users split and settle shared expenses.

The Hinglish language support will roll out to users from early 2022 while the Bill Split feature will be available later this year.

Google Search updates

Google Search for Indian users now gives the option to access web pages originally written in other languages and see them in their preferred language. It will translate high-quality content from sources like Wikipedia and Quora to a local language when they appear on search results. It is currently available in five languages including Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam with more options in the future.

Another update is that Google is expanding the ability to read aloud search results for those who prefer to consume content by listening. The feature will be available in India first and in five Indian languages i.e. Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil.

Climate notifications

Google has announced its partnership with Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to launch weather alerts for extreme climatic conditions. The company said that extreme weather conditions and serve alerts issued by IMD will be displayed in the ‘At-a-glance’ section on the user’s Android phone’s home screen as well as Google Search. Additionally, Google has also partnered with Central Pollution Control Board to provide the latest Air Quality Index information from their nearest station.
