Dynamic Island and USB-C rumoured yet again for the Apple iPhone 15 series this year

  • Reaffirming previous reports, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has shed light on some of the features coming to the next-gen iPhones in September
  • Rumours dating back several months have talked about the iPhone 15 picking up the Pro-exclusive Dynamic Island cutout
  • Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 15 models could also come with some camera improvements

The Apple iPhone 15 has been a constant part of the rumour mill for several months. We’re now just over two months from the official unveiling of the new lineup, and leaks are expectedly beginning to pick up pace.

Writing for the weekly Power On newsletter for Bloomberg on Sunday, Mark Gurman has reiterated some of the new additions coming to the iPhone 15 lineup, including the Pro and Pro Max versions.

We’ve already discussed the potential utilisation of low-injection pressure over-molding (LiPO) technology for the iPhone 15 Pro and the 15 Pro Max. This tech has been previously used by Apple in the Apple Watch series and would help cut down the screen bezels significantly.

Gurman claims that the use of LIPO tech would enable Apple to limit the borders of the screen to just 1.5mm, a big enough reduction from the 2.2mm borders seen on the currently available Pro iPhones.

While the Pro models will be packed to the brim with upgrades in camera, display and other departments, the base iPhone 15 models won’t be exempt. As we’ve heard for quite a long time now, the two entry-level iPhones this year will pick up the Dynamic Island cutout on top of the display.

Gurman reaffirms the addition of this particular feature, which was first introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max last year. A USB-C port will also make it to the iPhone 15 series this year, a massive upgrade that could mark the beginning of the end of the long-serving Lightning port.

The base iPhone 15 models are also expected to pick up the Apple A16 chipset from the iPhone 14 Pro series, while some camera upgrades are also expected to be on board. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro series will leverage the new 3nm Apple A17 chip.

iPhone 15 Pro models will gain a new Action button

As we’ve previously discussed, the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro Max will gain a new Action Button similar to the Apple Watch Ultra, albeit with up to nine customisable actions with the key. This Action button would replace the iconic iPhone mute switch, reports claim.

We’re also learning that Apple initially wanted to include touch-sensitive volume keys with haptic feedback on the new Pro models. However, it seems like the company will now stick with the same physical up and down keys.
