The Reno8 is the latest device from OPPO. The leading smartphone manufacturer’s Reno series of phones have established a name for themselves thanks to outstanding cameras, stunning designs, and premium specifications and this latest entrant is no different.
The smartphone offers a top-notch camera setup with dual Sony flagship sensors, blazing-fast 80W SUPERVOOCTM flash charging technology, a 90Hz AMOLED display, a powerful and efficient chipset as well as a sleek and eye-catching design. Because of all this and more, the Reno8 is an incredible all-rounder with the potential to disrupt the mid-range segment in India. The OPPO Reno8 is priced at an incredibly competitive INR 29,999 and is now available via Flipkart, OPPO’s official Store and across mainline retailers. Let’s dive into the various aspects that help it stand out from the rest of the competition and make it a must-buy.
Sleek and streamlined unibody design
The design has always been OPPO’s forte, and Reno8 is the latest example of the company’s design prowess. The smartphone features the same sleek and streamlined unibody design seen on OPPO’s flagship series of smartphones. The design of the camera array is inspired by vintage cinema cameras. Paired with the Ring Flash, the geometric arrangement of circles creates a unique aesthetic based on order and simplicity The entire module is integrated with the back cover, which makes the phone appear seamless and smooth. What I really liked is this clever design not only looks great but also prevents dust from accumulating around the camera area.
The OPPO Reno8 is just 7.67mm thick and that is the reason why the phone looks so sleek and fits comfortably in my hand. It also weighs a paltry 179g because of which I did not have any issues using it for long hours or carrying it in my pocket all day. It is offered in two beautiful colours – Shimmer Gold and Shimmer Black. The design is also functional – the matte-finish glass did not pick up fingerprints and offered enhanced grip.
Thanks to a combination of a powerful chipset and OPPO’s highly optimised ColorOS 12.1, the Reno8 offers blazing fast performance in both day-to-day use as well as gaming. The device is powered by a highly competent MediaTek Dimensity 1300 processor. Based on an advanced 6nm manufacturing process, the 5G capable processor features massive updates over its predecessor. Not only has the CPU performance increased by over 40 per cent and the GPU performance by 106 per cent, but the power efficiency has also risen by 20 per cent. The LPDDR4X RAM and ultra-fast UFS 3.1 storage also contribute to the Reno8’s stellar performance.
The Reno8 also features an advanced Super-Conductive VC Liquid Cooling System with a super-conductive graphite film, a large area vapour chamber, and a super-conductive aluminium alloy middle frame. All in all, the total cooling area has increased by 16.8 per cent compared to OPPO’s previous cooling system. The end result is that high-intensity workloads like gaming are handled effortlessly without thermal throttling.
During my use, the phone flew through both everyday tasks like browsing the web and using social media applications as well as intensive gaming sessions.
Super smooth 90Hz AMOLED display
The smartphone has a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and a touch sampling rate of up to 180Hz. As a result, tasks like scrolling through web pages and navigating the user interface felt absolutely butter smooth during my usage. That is not all, though! The high refresh rate also makes compatible games feel fluid. In selected games, the touch sampling rate can be increased up to 1000Hz, which will speed up the response time considerably and give users an edge over their opponents. The display is also certified to play Netflix and Amazon Prime Video content in HD, which meant I could stream my favorite shows and movies in high definition.
Large battery with 80W SUPERVOOCTM flash charging
The massive 4,500mAh battery on the OPPO Reno8 promises long, class-leading battery life. It provided me with enough juice to keep the phone going for an entire day, despite my unusually heavy usage of calls, use of social media apps, intensive use of the camera and gaming.
The piece de resistance, though, is the new upgraded 80W SUPERVOOCTM flash charging technology which allows you to top up the battery in a matter of minutes. The phone can be fully charged in only 28 minutes, and a 50 per cent charge takes just 11 minutes. A mere 5-minute charge is enough for 2 straight hours of gaming – as tested by the German independent safety authority, TÜV Rheinland. This provided me with enough juice to keep the phone going for an entire day, despite my unusually heavy usage that consists of calls, use of social media apps, the camera and gaming.
What gave me peace of mind is the fact that the 80W SUPERVOOCTM flash charging technology is not just fast, it is also safe and efficient. The Reno8 offers 5 layers of charging protection and features OPPO’s self-designed Battery Health Engine technology, which intelligently controls the charging current and voltage through real-time monitoring. This can extend the battery lifespan to as many as 1,600 charge/discharge cycles, which is unprecedented. In other words, the battery can still retain peak performance even after four years of daily usage, ensuring you never have to face low power emergencies and never worry about running out of power. And thus, this smartphone is not just a powerful performer but a long-lasting one!
Over the past few years, OPPO has emerged as a leader in smartphone photography. The OPPO Reno8 carries this mantle forward with flagship-grade cameras that make it a serious photography tool. There is a triple camera setup at the back with a 50MP primary camera, an 8MP wide-angle sensor, and a 2MP macro camera. The main camera uses Sony’s flagship IMX766 sensor with 1μm sized pixels that can be doubled in size via OPPO’s Quadra Binning algorithm. This enables the camera to capture more light and improves the clarity of images.
The 32 MP front camera’s IMX709 with RGBW sensor has been exclusively customised and built with Sony hardware. The camera features a groundbreaking pixel array design, which combined with OPPO’s Quadra Binning algorithm, allows it to receive 60 per cent more light and produce 35 per cent less noise than standard RGGB sensors. In my experience, images shot with both the front and rear cameras were crisp, clear, and well-lit even in extremely challenging lighting conditions.
King of Portraits
The Reno8 also takes stunning portrait images and videos thanks to a combination of advanced image processing hardware and clever software features. The results are phenomenal. In the samples I captured with the phone, the subject stayed in sharp focus while the background melted into dreamy light spheres. A feature I found really nifty is AI Portrait Retouching that uses 193 facial recognition points to retouch images differently for each unique face, for simply stunning group selfies. OPPO has also added a beauty filter in the front camera for hiding necklines.
A feature called Ultra HDR Video helps take vivid and clear portrait videos even in situations where the brightest and darkest elements are too polarizing. In my experience, the Reno8 also took beautiful portrait images at night. This is possible because the smartphone can perform parallel R/G/B three-channel AI noise reduction in RAW domain, leading to crystal clear night portraits.
OPPO Reno8 also has an Ultra Night Video feature which automatically detects ambient light, improving the clarity and colour expression of videos shot at night. Ultra Night Video is enabled by default, which means I always get the perfect video without having to manually adjust settings every single time.
There is a dedicated Portrait Mode in the camera app which offers 22 levels of adjustment to change the aperture and the size of the bokeh light spots in the background. Rounding off the camera package is 960fps slow motion, which uses motion detection and frame interpolation to intelligently add a cinematic bullet time effect to your videos and Hyperlapse, which allows you to create time-lapse videos while in motion.
Optimised and intuitive software
The OPPO Reno8 runs ColorOS 12.1 – the latest version of OPPO’s smart and intuitive operating system. Built upon Google’s Android 12, ColorOS 12.1 delivers an intelligent, incredibly personalised, and secure experience. It is packed with convenient features aimed at making your life easier. Thanks to a feature called Air Gestures, you can control and navigate the smartphone with just the motion of your hand. Dirty hands? No problem. I could easily scroll through social apps like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube with a wave of my hand. This was not only super easy but saved time as well. Air Gestures can also be used to answer or mute calls and pause YouTube videos. Multi-Screen Connect is another useful feature that allows you to create a clone of your phone on your computer and work seamlessly across the two devices.
Also on board are 3D animated emojis, called omojis. These allow users to create highly personalised avatars using the built-in automatic facial recognition technology. ColorOS 12.1 on the Reno8 brings with it even more customisation options in the form of 20 new omoji collars, hats and facial elements. ColorOS 12.1 is also highly secure. OPPO’s data privacy and information security standards have been certified by third parties such as ISO and TrustArc. The Anti-Peeping notifications feature hides detailed notification content when someone else looks at your screen and a feature called Recent Tasks Protection helps prevent sensitive information from being exposed to others whilst switching between applications.
Versatile all-rounder, a no-compromise smartphone
The OPPO Reno8 hardware package is top-notch thanks to the fast and efficient MediaTek Dimensity 1300 processor under the hood, UFS 3.1 storage, a super smooth 90Hz display, and a sizeable 4,500mAh battery with blazing-fast 80W SUPERVOOCTM fast charging. The battery can also retain peak performance for up to four years, providing durability and peace of mind. With Sony flagship sensors, advanced image processing hardware and clever software features, the cameras are also top-notch.
On the design front, the phone not only features a stunning design but is also incredibly thin and light and thus fits comfortably in hand. The icing on the cake is the intuitive, secure, and feature-rich software experience. All in all, I think OPPO has outdone itself with the Reno8. It is an incredibly versatile all-rounder that delivers everything one expects from a smartphone. During my time using the phone, I was impressed with every single aspect of this device.
