With the arrival of the new HONOR 9X, the rivalry in the mid-range smartphone segment has heated up once again. The 9X is currently the most affordable smartphone with a pop-up selfie camera, and brings other notable features like powerful cameras, a capable processor and a big battery. At its price point, its main competitors include the Redmi Note 8 Pro, which comes with a quad camera setup, and the Samsung Galaxy M30s, which boasts of great battery life. So how does the new HONOR smartphone stack up against these two? We’re going to find out in this detailed comparison.
Display and design
The HONOR 9X clearly beats the other two devices in terms of looks. It features a large 6.59-inch LCD display that is spread across the entirety of its front surface, with neither a notch nor a punch-hole spoiling its full-screen nature. This leads to new levels of immersion, which are not achievable on the Redmi Note 8 Pro or the Galaxy M30s, both of which feature waterdrop notches. While the former houses a 6.53-inch LCD, the latter opts for a 6.4-inch AMOLED panel. All three devices showcase their visuals in FHD+ resolution.
Design is another department where the 9X shines. The pop-up camera is the defining feature of the 9X, and this snapper is capable of protecting itself with features like Intelligent Fall Detection, Downward Pressure Protection and dust and splash protection. As for the rear surface, it features an eye grabbing ‘X’ logo rendered in gradient colours, and it’s covered with 3D curved plastic that gives the appearance of glass, while maintaining durability. The rear surface of the Note 8 Pro is made from glass and features a gradient finish. As for the M30s, it’s got a plastic rear panel. Lastly, all three phones feature headphone jacks and rear-mounted fingerprint readers.
The HONOR 9X is home to a triple rear camera setup. Its main draw is the 48MP primary sensor. This is paired with an 8MP ultra wide-angle unit and a 2MP depth sensor meant for portrait shots. Several AI features have made their way into this snapper, including 500 different scene detection modes and Artificial Image Stabilization (AIS) for photos as well as videos. The 16MP front camera on this phone supports 8 different lighting modes, apart from other AI features.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro houses a quad camera cluster on its rear surface. This includes a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultra wide-angle camera, a 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro camera. Its front camera is a 20MP unit. As for the Galaxy M30s, it offers a triple camera setup, which comprises of a 48MP main camera, an 8MP ultra wide-angle snapper and a 5MP depth sensor. Its front camera is a 16MP sensor.
Hardware and battery
The HONOR 9X runs on the Kirin 710F chipset, with its 2.2GHz octa-core processor and a Mali-G51 MP4 GPU. Moreover, this highly advanced SoC is also assisted by GPU Turbo 3.0 technology, which reduces lag and improves touch response during intense gaming sessions. The Redmi Note 8 Pro runs on the 2GHz Helio G90T processor, whereas the M30s adopts a 2.3GHz octa-core Exynos 9611 processor. All three phones are similarly capable of offering great performance. When it comes to memory however, the HONOR 9X is the only one among the three to offer 128GB of storage on its base model. The base models of both the Redmi Note 8 Pro and Galaxy M30s offer just 64GB of storage.
The 9X ships with a 4,000mAh battery that’s sufficiently large for a phone with this kind of hardware. You can definitely expect this device to last an entire day on a single charge, and still have some juice left in it for some bedtime browsing. The Redmi Note 8 Pro grabs a slightly larger 4,500mAh battery, but the M30s beats both the handsets with its 6,000mAh cell. All three smartphones are fitted with USB Type-C charging ports.
Price and availability
The HONOR 9X is all set to go on sale via Flipkart at 12am from January 19th onwards. Both its 4GB and 6GB RAM models ship with 128GB worth of storage, and cost Rs 13,999 and Rs 16,999, respectively. The Redmi Note 8 Pro is currently being sold at Rs 14,999 for its 6GB + 64GB model, Rs 15,999 for its 6GB + 128GB model and Rs 17,999 for its 8GB + 128GB variant. Without a doubt, the HONOR 9X is the most stylish phone among these three. Its full-screen display, pop-up front camera and its eye grabbing rear surface make it an extremely attractive device. And it doesn’t fall behind in terms of other specifications as well. It’s got an impressive triple camera setup, a powerful processor and a sufficiently large battery.
