How to backup and restore contacts on Android

An average individual can remember a few mobile numbers easily. But what happens when your phone contact book is filled with hundreds of phone numbers? It’s not possible to memorise all those contacts, and in case you lose your phone or reset it, those numbers are gone forever. This can easily be solved by backing up your contacts.

Google has a nifty backup and restore feature in Android, which makes it simple for Android users to backup their entire device data including contacts. Therefore, in case you switch to a new device, you can simply choose to restore it from the cloud during the initial setup of the new device. Here’s how you can backup and restore contacts on an Android smartphone.

How to backup contacts in Android smartphone

You can manually backup your phone data anytime in Android or even set it to backup automatically at regular intervals. Here are the steps to backup your contacts in Android.

  1. On your Android smartphone, go to Settings
  2. Navigate to ‘System’ towards the bottom of the list
  3. Tap on ‘Backup’ (In case you don’t find it look for ‘Backup and reset’ in ‘User and backup’)
  4. Turn on Back up to Google Drive
  5. In case you have not backed up before, you can click on ‘Back up now’ to make a fresh backup

This will back up your entire device data including contacts, apps, apps data, phone settings, and call/SMS, among others.

How to restore contacts from Google

Once you have backed up your data on Google, you can restore your contacts anytime from the backup. Here’s how you can do it.

  1. On your Android smartphone, go to Settings
  2. Navigate to ‘Google’ and tap on it
  3. Scroll to the bottom and click on ‘Set up & restore’
  4. Click on ‘Restore contacts’
  5. If you have more than one Google account setup on your device, choose the one where you back up data
  6. Choose the device with the contacts that you want to copy
  7. Tap on ‘Restore’
  8. Done
