WhatsApp has been facing backlash after it announced its updated terms of services stating that user data will be shared with titshe parent company, Facebook. While the company has announced that the new privacy policy is meant only for WhatsApp Businesses and individual user data is still safe, many users migrated to alternatives like Telegram and Signal. Telegram has been pushing more features to attract WhatsApp users, and now allows exporting WhatsApp chats to its app.

While the feature is nifty and makes switching from WhatsApp to Telegram convenient, there’s a catch. Personal chats need to be imported individually, which might be inconvenient if you have a lot of chats. The feature to import WhatsApp chats to Telegram is available to all users. The new update with the ability to export chat is available for iOS as well as Android users. The process is pretty straight-forward but as mentioned before, you will have to import chats individually to Telegram. For group chats, Telegram users will have to create a group on the app first and add members manually. Below is the process to export individual WhatsApp chats to Telegram.

How to transfer WhatsApp chats to Telegram on iOS

  1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone
  2. Open the personal chat that you wish to export and tap on the contact name on top
  3. Scroll down to the bottom and click on ‘Export Chat’
  4. Select Telegram from the iOS share option
  5. Select whether you want to export ‘With Media’ or ‘Without Media’
  6. It will redirect to the Telegram app and ask you to select a contact to import the chat
  7. Once you select the contact, the importing process will begin

How to transfer WhatsApp chats to Telegram on Android

  1. Open WhatsApp on your smartphone
  2. Open the personal chat that you wish to export and tap on the three dots on the top
  3. Click on ‘More’ from the pop-down menu and click on ‘Export Chat’
  4. Select Telegram from the list
  5. It will redirect to the Telegram app and ask you to select a contact to import the chat
  6. Once you select the contact, the importing process will begin

In case you choose to import chats with media, the process might take longer to finish. The process of importing WhatsApp group chats to Telegram is also the same, however, when redirected to Telegram it will ask you to create a new group and add members to it.
