Twitter has been gradually adding new features to its platform. The social media giant has now introduced voice messaging support in direct messages. India is among the first three countries alongside Brazil and Japan to receive this new feature. It is being rolled out in a phased manner for both Android and iOS users.

Commenting on the new feature, Twitter India, Managing Director Manish Maheshwari said ‘We’re excited to bring the voice messages in DMs experiment to the country and give people a new way to express themselves and help them connect through the nuances, emotion, and empathy built by hearing someone’s voice.’

How to send Twitter voice message in DMs

Voice messages in DMs enables the users to send voice notes as direct messages. Twitter says that the feature will make it easier for people to have conversations. It is similar to how voice messaging works on Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp. 

Each voice message can be up to 140 seconds (approximately 2 minutes 30 seconds) long. This helps users to chat quickly when they are on the move or there is too much to type. The social media giant adds that it wants to create a more human experience for listeners and storytellers. 

Sending voice DMs on Twitter is currently restricted to Android and iOS users for now, however, users can play the voice messages on the web version. To send a voice DM you can check the steps below:

How to send Twitter voice DM on Android

  1. Open an existing conversation or start a new one
  2. In the DM conversation, tap the voice recording icon located at the right of the message box to start recording. 
  3. Tap the pause icon to stop recording.
  4. You can also listen to the message before sending it. 

How to send a Twitter voice DM on iOS

  1. Open an existing conversation or start a new one
  2. In the DM conversation, press and hold the voice recording icon to start recording a message
  3. Swipe up and release the icon to send it
