Huawei Launches Bezel-less MateBook X Pro Laptop at MWC

Huawei, the Chinese electronics manufacturer has pushed tech boundaries to the next level by launching a laptop with almost no bezels. Currently, Dell and Asus were the only companies moving their laptops in this direction, but it seems Huawei is up for a challenge. This brand new laptop has been dubbed as the MateBook X Pro. Let’s find out what this device is all about.

Let’s start off with the design of the laptop. The first look at the laptop will give you a sense that it has been built out of premium materials and should be durable. Once the laptop is flipped open, you will notice that the laptop has a screen fairly larger than most laptops its size. This is because of its 13.9-inch display panel which has an astounding screen-to-body ratio of 91%, and a resolution of 3000 x 2000 pixels bringing its aspect ratio to 3:2. Huawei has also made some weird design decisions owing to its bezel-less display, which includes the webcam. We have seen Dell integrate its camera on the bottom of the screen and end up capturing your face at a weird angle. The MateBook X Pro takes this to another level. The webcam on this device is integrated into the keyboard.

With the design part out of the way, let’s discuss what runs this laptop. Underneath its hood, the MateBook X Pro is powered by either the i7-8550U or i5-8250U processor, both of which are part of Intel’s 8th-gen Kaby Lake-R Core processor series. This means that the laptop will be able to handle almost all daily processes with ease. To top that off, these processors offer best-in-class efficiency, hence, better battery life. On the memory side of things, you can either opt for either an 8GB or 16GB of RAM variant. For graphics performance, the laptop also has the Nvidia GeForce MX150 on board further adding 2GB GDDR5 RAM. The MateBook X Pro will ship with either 256GB or 512GB of storage in the form of SSD. This will allow for high read/write speeds and quick boot times.

In terms of connectivity, the Chinese company has been less generous by providing two USB-C ports and just one USB-A port. Although USB Type-C is quickly gaining popularity, you will still need a dongle if you wish to plug in two thumb-drives into this laptop for the meantime. The laptop also comes with a fingerprint sensor for logging into the laptop swiftly and securely. On the battery side of things, the brand has claimed that the laptop can be used for up to 14 hours on a full charge. Now if this figure is to be believed, it will truly be impressive. However, manufacturers achieve these figures in laboratory conditions that don’t always pan out in real life conditions, so keep your expectations realistic. Even if the battery pulls off 10 hours on a single charge, it is still quite impressive.

The MateBook X Pro has been priced for EUR 1,499 (approximately Rs. 1,20,00) for the i5 processor with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. The fully specced-up model will cost around EUR 1,899 (approximately Rs. 1,51,400) with an i7 processor and 512GB SSD. The laptop is expected to hit shelves globally later this July.
