At its global launch event today, Huawei has announced its second-generation foldable smartphone. It is dubbed as the Huawei Mate Xs and arrives as the successor to the Mate X that was launched last year. Notably, the Mate X never made its way outside China. The foldable smartphone comes with flagship specifications and will compete against the likes of recently launched Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr. Let’s take a detailed look at what the device offers out of the box:
Huawei Mate Xs specifications and features
Beginning with the display, the Mate Xs sports an 8-inch AMOLED screen in open mode bearing a 2,480 x 2,200 pixels resolution. When folded, the device features a 6.6-inch and 6.38-inch screen on the front and back respectively. The latest offering borrows the same design language from the original Mate X. Huawei says that the Mate Xs has a 2-layer structure of polyamide film on the top of the OLED panel. The smartphone maker also claims that it has improved the hinge mechanism with a falcon-wing design that ensures more durability compared to the Mate X.
In the imaging department, the Huawei Mate Xs is equipped with a LEICA branded quad-camera setup. It comprises of a 40MP f/1.8 main shooter, an 8MP telephoto lens, 16MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 3D ToF depth sensor. There is no front camera since users have to fold the device and take selfies. The camera features on the Mate Xs include an ISO range of 2,04,800 for shooting in low light, a 3x optical and 30x digital zoom and OIS+AIS image stabilisation.
Under the hood, the Mate Xs is powered by a Kirin 990 chipset with an integrated 5G modem. The processor is coupled with 8GB RAM and 512GB onboard storage. The device also comes with an improved cooling system. The Huawei Mate Xs is backed by a 4,500mAh battery unit with support for 55W fast charging. On the software front, the foldable smartphone runs on EMUI 10 based on the latest open-source version of Android. It ships with Huawei Mobile Services instead of Google services. The device can display up to three apps at a time.
Huawei Mate Xs pricing and availability
Huawei has priced the Mate Xs at €2,499 (~Rs 1,94,838) and it will go on sale next month. It will be released in global markets as well, unlike the original Mate X. However, the brand hasn’t shared the exact launch timeline of the same.
