Huawei P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ with Kirin 990 5G and 50MP cameras launched

After months of leaks, Huawei finally unveiled its flagship P40 series of smartphones today through an online event. Like the previous P-series phones, the P40 series which include the Huawei P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ smartphones are designed to deliver an enhanced photography experience through features like custom-made RYYB sensors, periscope lens, up to 10x optical zoom and more. The P40 trio are driven by the 5G-ready Kirin 990 5G chipset. The P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ are the first phones from the company to arrive with high screen refresh rates.

Huawei P40 and P40 Pro smartphones debuts with Kirin 990 5G and 50MP cameras

The Huawei P40 Pro features a glass and metal combination chassis and an IP68 rating for water resistance. The P40 Pro+ is also IP68 certified smartphone with a premium ceramic build. The P40 and P40 Pro+ are fitted with 6.58-inch AMOLED QHD+ panels with a pill-shaped cutout for dual front-facing cameras and a dedicated 3D face unlock sensor. The P40 Pro features a 90Hz refresh rate, whereas the Pro+ model comes with a 120Hz panel.

The Kirin 990 5G powers both smartphones. They are equipped with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ are packed with 4,200mAh batteries. The P40 Pro supports 40W SuperCharge technology while, the Plus model comes with 55W fast charging. The P40 and P40 Pro+ support 27W and 40W fast wireless charging, respectively. Both come with 5W reverse wireless charging.

Up front, the Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ have a 32-megapixel primary selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture and autofocus. This is coupled with a 3D depth sensor and a dedicated IR sensor for 3D face recognition. The rear cameras of the P40 lineup are dubbed as Leica Ultra Vision system. Leading the setup is an all new custom-made 50-megapixel RYYB sensor with f/1.9 aperture and OIS. For better photos in low-light conditions, the lens supports pixel binning technology. There is a dedicated wide-angle 40-megapixel cine lens with f/1.8 aperture for videography. It supports autofocus and 4K video shooting at 60fps, HDR videos, 7,680fps slow-motion videos and 4K time lapses. Next comes the OIS assisted 12-megapixel RYYB periscope zoom lens that offers 5x optical zoom and 50x SuperSensing Zoom (digital zoom). There is a 3D ToF (Time of Flight) sensor for adding depth effects to images. There is a Macro Mode onboard for capturing shots with 2.5cm focal length.

The Huawei P40 Pro+ is the first ever phone from the company to feature a penta-lens setup. It is fitted with the same main, cine and depth sensing cameras that are available on the P40 Pro, but it comes with an additional f/2.4 aperture 8-megapixel telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture and 3x optical zoom and another 8-megapixel f/4.4 aperture lens with OIS and 10x optical zoom support. The rectangular camera setups of both phones have eight-tone dual LED flash units.

Huawei P40 specifications and features

The glass-bodied Huawei P40 is an IP53 certified splash-resistant phone. The handset features a flat AMOLED display measuring 6.1 inches with an elliptical cutout for dual selfie snappers. It lacks the 3D face scanning sensor seen on the Pro models. The screen produces full HD+ resolution and a conventional refresh rate of 60Hz.

The Kirin 990 5G powered Huawei P40 has 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and a native storage of 128GB. It houses a 3,800mAh battery with 22.5W SuperCharge technology. It lacks support for wireless charging.

The Huawei P40 features a 32-megapixel f/2.2 aperture selfie camera and a 3D depth sensor in the front. The rear side of the smartphone has a Leica Ultra Vision triple camera system. It comprises of the same 50-megapixel RYYB main lens with OIS found on the Pro models. It is coupled with a 16-megapixel wide-angle shooter with f/2.2 aperture. Lastly, there is an 8-megapixel telephoto shooter with 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom support.

Android 10 with EMUI 10.1 comes preloaded on the Huawei P40 series. As expected, none of the devices come with Google apps and services owing to the ongoing Huawei ban int he US. Instead, the company offers its own Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) along with the AppGallery. These phones are equipped with a hybrid SIM card slot with support for proprietary NanoMemory 2 card, 5G connectivity, e-SIM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, GPS, USB-C and in-display fingerprint scanners.

Huawei P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ price and release date

The Huawei P40 with 8GB RAM + 128GB storage is priced at €799 (~Rs 65,900) in Europe. The P40 Pro comes with 8GB RAM + 256GB storage and it costs €999 (~Rs 82,400). The P40 and P40 Pro come in following colours: Black, Deep Sea Blue, Ice White, Silver Frost and Blush Gold. The Huawei P40 and P40 Pro will be available for purchase from April 7th.

The P40 Pro+ with 8GB RAM + 512GB storage will be selling for €1,399 (~Rs 1,15,300) in June in European markets. Ceramic Black and Ceramic White are the two colour variants of the P40 Pro+.
