Huawei P40 Pro tipped to sport 10x optical zoom lens

On: December 23, 2019

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is set to unveil its next flagship smartphone, the P40 series in March 2020. The P40 will arrive as the successor to the P30 in standard and Pro editions. Ahead of the launch, we are starting to get details surrounding the P40 series. Recently the smartphone’s exclusive renders gave us a glimpse at a square primary camera module. Now reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that the P40 Pro will be the first smartphone to come with a 10x optical zoom while the standard variant will feature 5x zoom. Currently, no smartphone in the market offers a 10x optical zoom feature.

Beginning with the P40 Pro, Kuo stated that the smartphone will come with a redesigned periscope telephoto lens to integrate the 10x optical zoom. The smartphone will integrate an 8MP telephoto lens with an f/4.0 aperture. The periscope lens will make use of both prism and mirror structure to enhance the zoom capabilities and achieve the desired results. To recall, the P30 uses just a prism lens for optical zoom. The standard P40 will also sport a periscope telephoto lens but with 5x optical zoom.

Kuo stated that Huawei will use the 5x optical periscope lens in other high-end phones which includes Nova series, Mate series, and Honor smartphones. Currently, the P30 Pro is the only smartphone in Huawei’s portfolio to feature a periscope camera. Kuo says that the company is expected to target around 9 million shipments of the 10x periscope zoom and 28 million units of the 5x periscope zoom lens.

As for the rest of the specifications, the Huawei P40 series is expected to come with a new design and improvements in camera, performance and battery life. The smartphones will run on Android 10 but without any Google services. The P40 series might feature a 6.5-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate panel and a camera cutout on the top left corner. The P40 series is rumoured to be equipped with Kirin 990 processor, LEICA-branded quad-cameras, and a 5,500mAh battery unit with 50W fast charging.

Kuo predicts that the price of the Huawei P40 series will start between RMB 4,000 to RMB 5,000 (~Rs 40,500 to Rs 50,700). We will keep you updated as we learn about more details on the Huawei P40 Pro.
